A few racers I know will run thinner motor oil. However these are
transmissions that get rebuilt every couple hundred miles.
What kind of performance driving are you doing that you are worrying about
the viscosity in the transmission? If you are not 100% track use and
competing at a level where hundredths of a second could be the difference of
winning, I would stick with 80-90 dyno oil. You can try synthetic but when I
switched my ghia and Z over they both started shifting really ruff. And if
you run synthetic in an older Porsche limited slip diff it wont work, it was
designed for less slick oil.

Has anyone tried this before? Any reason NOT to go this route? The
factory recommended 80 weight oil just seems too thick for
performance driving, and I know (for the engine) 5W-30 makes a
difference... so why not go thinner in the tranny, too?
