Yes.. very common.

I used a sharp box cutter, and a dremmel to cut the
plastic and get the metal plates out.

Once they were out, I replaced some with new ones I
made from Stainless Steel..  MOST of the places, you
can just drill a hole and use a bolt with a washer
because the bolt head is not seen anyway...  but a few
others I needed to epoxy my SS plate and bolt in.
