Jan & Greg, My flaps were never painted. Instead they appear to have a very light plating (zinc or cadmium?) that has rusted through in places. I asked Al, the owner of Classic Auto Air Manufacturing, if he could re-plate them. He didn't like this idea as he explained that it is a sacrificial layer that would eventually wear off again. He normally bead blasts them and gives them a clear coat. Since I was just looking at his plating tank, I thought he would be anxious to use it. This guy is very straight forward & honest. The flapper doors are made of sheet metal and the hinges are very simple. They just roll the edge of the metal over a steel rod. I might replace with a brass rod. Now that I've thought about it, I know this local fabricator who might be able to make new flappers out of SS. Now that is being anal! :-) Classic Auto Air is in the process of making reproduction evaporators for our D's. The last I heard is that he was waiting on a shipment of pre-bent tubes. I don't like the PJ Grady replacement I got because it has copper tubes with aluminum fins. Al said that I should expect an efficiency loss of 6 to 8 degrees F if I used it. And if I used R-134a, the combined loss would be even worse. The one advantage to using copper is that it lasts a lot longer than aluminum. I think the trick is to install a screen in the cowl inlet to keep leaves out & don't park under trees. Walt ------------------------ Yahoo!
