RE: [doc] BTI Problem

Hi

Re: BTI

It would seem that  BTI has to harmonized throughout the EEC and a question
was tabled some time ago about having a database that could be accessed by
all member states. This was to ensure that all the duties would be same,
otherwise if Portugal only applied a (say) 1% duty charge it would be
beneficial to import it via Portugal and then drive it to the UK with no
further duty payable. The database as far as I can tell did not materialise
however and confusion still reigns supreme.

I think it may be worthwhile to find out from other DeLorean Clubs / Owners
in other EEC countries what they were charged.

If this is then fed back through to HMC&E, if only a relatively small amount
(to them) of back duty is to be collected it may be possible to have this
waived. In any event it may keep HMCE chasing their own red tape for a year
or two and defer payment at the same time.

I hope this helps the people this affects.

Interestingly, when I phoned up for the BTI, the woman initially said that
she thought 6000 cars remaining was in fact too many to be "rare" - she
thought the number was more like the 500 mark - and she was quite
surprised
when she tapped the details into her computer to find that the 5% did
  apply...

Perhaps we've all been getting away with it by mistake?
