Re: [doc] Downside

Thanks Martin. No, I've got one locally, courtesy of the Renault garage.

They found various studs broken on the engine, including an exhaust manifold
stud which had broken off in the block, followed by a drill bit, also broken
off, presumably part of an earlier attempt to get the stud out!

Tony, I hope you haven't gone stateside for a clutch? They're Renault 30.

Dear John (and all), It seems unlikely that my car will be ready by the weekend. The engine rebuild has taken longer than anticipated, and I'm still awaiting a clutch. Even if they get it back in by the end of the week I would be reluctant to go far away from base for a while until its reliabilityhas been demonstrated. There's so much been taken apart that I can't see it all working properly again without a few snags along the way. I've alsofound a lot more rust than I anticipated on the chassis. It seems that every time I look at it another loads of epoxy flakes off revealing more rust. It needs a bit of welding near the front but other than that it's mostlysurface rust and I have applied copious quantities of Kurust and Hammeritein order to tame it as much as I can. It's dificult to know where to stop, short of taking the whole car apart.I would still dearly love to visit Downside, John, but I fear it will have to be another time. I understand that the appeal of a solo car is not the same as having a whole cavalcade! However, I caused a bit of a stir when I went back to my old school a year ortwo ago, and was deferentially directed to park at the front of the schoolbuilding rather than sent round the back with the jags and beemers. Keep in touch. Tony LawtherSouthampton
