You say you have power to only the purple wire.

I assume you performed this test with the side lights on?

You should also have power on the red(should have orange stripe) wire
but only when your side lights are ON

Personally I hate 'splicing' wires in. If you have no power on this
wire, then it's only a short run to its connection point which should be
on or near the dimmer switch for your binnacle lights.
