Dear modified D owners (Martin:),
I think that modified Deloreans are excellent, I love big ICE systems, Neons, big exhaustsystems, strobes and funky tailpipes. If I had a second car, I'd fit the lot, but I've only got one car, so I'm going original. You see, I wasn't ranting about modified Deloreans, there's nothing in the slightest wrong with improving the car, it's just the more old fashioned part of me hopes that people further down the line don't start creating the painted, changed and "bastardised" Deloreans you get in America. My tailpipes arepretty ugly, but they are removable:) Paint is removable, but what a horrible job for the next owner. So, no flaming needed on this. I believe that modified and non-modified owners can co-exist in this world together, without conflicts or flaming.
I was watchingthe "Making of BTTF" on the weekend and heard some interesting snippets from the director and producer. The film script never specified using a car for the time machine. Up till only three months before the film started to be made, they had been toying with the idea of using a refrigerator as the time machine vessel!! I joke not. The car, then Delorean, idea wasa very late one, and certainly after the company had folded, so no cash left John Z Deloreans hands for the cars placement in the film. Between a fridge and a Delorean, I think we all know which one the film makers most wanted in the end. Who knows, if history had been a little different, we would all be collecting, and restoring early 80's refrigerators :)

Well, would you have ever got interested in the car had it not been for the
gullwing doors and stainless steel skin? I know the makers of BTTF wouldn't
have. Without these things, the car's pretty unremarkable from a purely
mechanical standpoint. Without them it'd be an underpowered Esprit with
poorer hadling but more luggage space*.
I feel I've been dug at here for modifying the car. The ONLY modifications
I've made are to put better/modern speakers in the rear which required
drilling two holed in the metal bracket (but unlike justabout everyone
else, I've made the effort to mount them in the intendedspace with the
original fixing hardware!). Everything else, like the remote
starter/alarm/central locking came from necessity and can be pulled out
with ease. I bought Houston's DIN stereo bracket so I could avoid cutting
the dash (and my Craig was stuffed). The Neons are not permanent either and
are only an inexpensive bit of fun (and don't knock it till you've tried
it! I took the michael out of James for his.... until I saw them. NB Neons
sourced in the US are considerably better than the crappy ones you see
slung under Vauxhall Novas over here). I've also replaced my shock
abosrbers with PJ Grady's and it's made my car into a delightful motorway
cruiser with a really rewardingly smooth drive. Nothing wrong with my OEM
shocks and I still have them.
AND BEFORE YOU GO MOANING ABOUT MODIFYING YOUR DELOREAN STEVE, CONSIDER THE
"DRAINPIPE" EXHAUST TIPS ON YOURS :-P
Anyway, that's my rant out the way. Flame proof jacket installed....

You gotta ask yourself these "What if" questions.. IF the Delorean stayed
in
production it'd probably not have been used in BTTF... or maybe it's
successor would have been.
I very much doubt I'd own one if it weren't for that film.... and you gotta
admit that it's history - not the doors - is why a lot of us like them.
They're rare, unusual and most of all - unique. If they made 10 million..
well, it'd be a Ford Mondeo!
And who else can say "Drive Stainless!" eh?
Mine is stock too.. and staying that way.
