When I bought my car in 2001, I made sure to put a fire extinguisher in it. You hear random stories of electrical or engine fires and how important it is to be ready. You may or may not put one into your car and always hope you will never encounter a situation where you might need it. Today was NOT that day. On my way with several other Deloreans to do some volunteer service giving rides to children with cancer at a special camp in NY State, a startling sight appeared in front of my eyes. The Delorean in front of me rounded the corner and started the last stretch of road about ½ mile from our destination. I instantly saw flames coming up from the engine compartment on his car! Unaware of what was happening due to a visual obstruction on the back of his car I started to honk my horn, flash my lights, and wave him over to the side of the road. Once stopped, I hopped out of my car, popped the bonnet and grabbed my 12 year old fire extinguisher. At the same time, another owner in the car behind me did the same thing. As we ran to the car with the fire, we both pulled the pin and sprayed the engine compartment. My extinguisher worked, the other did not since it has accidentally discharged once before. The fire was quickly contained and only minor damage occurred to the car. The root cause appeared to be a ruptured fuel line that spit gas onto the engine and ignited into flames. A few hoses and wires were melted, but the overall outcome was a happy one where nobody was hurt, and the car was not heavily damaged. Thankfully we had something to extinguish the fire! It?s important to always keep a fire extinguisher in your car and check it at least once per year. It?s a small investment that can save you and your car!
