The only difference between an engine running on gasoline and an engine running on LP is the carb itself (and of course the fuel tank). Everything else is 100% identical. Any gasoline engine can be converted to LP simply by changing the carb and plumbing it to an LP tank. The world is full of LP powered fork lifts running bone stock Toyota, Nissan, and Honda engines. And of course the converse is also true, as the engine in the back of #5939 for nearly a decade demonstrates. For the morbidly curious: My particular PRV was originally intended to drive the bilge pump in a barge. It was never intended to have a transmission hanging off the back, which is why my motor mounts are centered underneath the block rather than offset to the rear. Works pretty well if you ask me...: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MjA4R6t1Fs Bill Robertson #5939 --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, Stephen Rice <stevedmc@...> wrote: > > I believe Bill Robertson's current engine was originally setup to run > on propane. Most installs allow you to switch "on the fly". The more popular (in this country anyway) is CNG. Very commonly used on fork trucks, especially used indoors. The big problem is finding a place to install the tank. Other considerations, you get less gas mileage on CNG or LPG. It will take a while for you to save on the expense of all of the added equipment. There are not a lot of places that can fill the tank. The motor runs better and a LOT cleaner. No gas gauge. No road tax. > > David Teitelbaum > > > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "Matthew" <drivestainless@> wrote: > >> > >> In Peru, everyone does this. There are numerous garages in Lima (the capital) advertising the conversion for around $600. There are two types that they use, CNG & LPG, but the taxi drivers will tell you that the LPG will cause your engine to fail prematurely. It appears to work just as well, though the mileage is not as good as regular gasoline. > >> > >> In Peru gasoline is more expensive, so that may be why they are "flying off the shelves" there. There were few taxi cabs that I saw there that had *not* been converted. All of the installs that I saw involved strapping down a large cylinder in the trunk. > >> > >> Matt > >> #1604 > >> > >> --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "Justin Mettee" <jamettee@> wrote: > >> > > >> > Hearing more about conversion kits for cars to run off of compressed natural gas, I'm wondering if anyone has done a conversion to their DMC or their daily driver? > >> > > >> > I don't know much about what is involved (yet), but the few kits I see on the internet look a relatively minor update to the vehicle. It would seem that if these were a REAL answer for switching to a cheaper energy source, they would be flying off the shelves when gasoline prices go up. I guess the biggest problem with conversion would be finding a filling station with CNG. > >> > > >> > Thoughts/experiences? > >> > > >> > Justin Mettee > >> > > >> > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ > > > > To address comments privately to the moderating team, please address: > > moderators@... > > > > For more info on the list, tech articles, cars for sale see www.dmcnews.com > > > > To search the archives or view files, log in at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dmcnewsYahoo!
