Cool! I actually thought about this a while back & I'm glad to see it can be done... I wondered how to attach the cable to the wheel in place of the angle drive. Could I just remove the angle drive and screw the cable in where the a.d. was? Or do I need to make a "custom" cable like yours? I'd do this in a second if I could get the all the parts easily. Is our car "standard" when it comes to the speedo fittings? i.e. could I just buy a similar-length speedo cable made for another car, say an older GM, I wonder? I could care less about a 12% difference on the guages. - ed -- 1982 DMC-12 [11594] content22207 wrote: > > I got so disgusted with angle drives failing on me that I ran a cable > directly from the wheel to the speedometer (to the Lambda counter > actually -- it was an easier mating point). > http://d.yimg. com/kq/groups/ 1154320/hr/ 378857712/ name/AngleDrivel > essSpeedo1. jpg > <http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/1154320/hr/378857712/name/AngleDrivelessSpeedo1.jpg> > http://d.yimg. com/kq/groups/ 1154320/hr/ 971330485/ name/AngleDrivel > essSpeedo2. jpg > <http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/1154320/hr/971330485/name/AngleDrivelessSpeedo2.jpg> > http://d.yimg. com/kq/groups/ 1154320/hr/ 1636546834/ name/AngleDrivel > essSpeedo3. jpg > <http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/1154320/hr/1636546834/name/AngleDrivelessSpeedo3.jpg> > http://d.yimg. com/kq/groups/ 1154320/hr/ 552781634/ name/AngleDrivel > essSpeedo4. jpg > <http://d.yimg.com/kq/groups/1154320/hr/552781634/name/AngleDrivelessSpeedo4.jpg> > > Total cost: $5 (I got the fittings and DOT tubing free of charge -- > retail is closer to $15). > > Because the angle drive gear ratio is not 1:1, but somewhere around > 8:9, my speedometer reads about 10% low -- basically 5 MPH off. > Odometer is off slightly as well. > > Before this repair, my speedometer and odometer were 100% off (broken > -- AGAIN). > > One of these days when I'm rich and famous I will buy a case quantity > of angle drives.
