In that scenario, a professionally printed and bound copy of an e-zine would cost about $200. I know that, because that's what Ken just had to pay a printer for a one off proof to find out they weren't capable of printing a decent version of our magazine. Their idea of professional printing differed from ours, so maybe it would be even more! Yikes! Except for that problem, I still like the idea. You're saying that by making the magazine free, we could get enough subscribers/viewers to make it reasonable for us to ask our advertisers for a fee to display their ad. I have a pro-bono arrangement with Ken currently as the designer of DCS Magazine. I've never charged him for the work that goes into the magazine, and in exchange, he lets me advertise in it for free, and of course I use the magazine in my design portfolio for my business. This means that in a PDF only arrangement, 100% of advertising fees would go directly to support the show.which, again, is the point of doing a magazine in the first place. Of the vendors monitoring this conversation that currently advertise in DCS, what do you think of this idea? Would you pay to have your business advertised to a potentially wider market, and at the same time, support the car show? If it doesn't sound appealing, let us know why it doesn't. -Josh From: dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Marc Levy Sent: Tuesday, January 06, 2009 2:12 PM To: dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Re: [DML] Re: DeLorean magazines. Well, if nothing else at least I got some good discussion going again!! No need to apologize.... The problems that have been stated by you, Josh, and others for why to stay with print can all be overcome. The primary desire to HAVE a printed copy is easy to overcome. PRINT IT! If someone (lowest common denominator) wants to get a nice shiny (expensive) printed copy in the mail instead of on-line, offer it as a service. Let those people pay the premium for it. Yes, it is easier to copy electronic formats. That is why I said to make it FREE. Then there is no incentive to make "illegal copies". If the advertisements are embedded in the document, then making copies for friends would only help you! More people see the advertisements. Just like I did with the DMA videos, you can watermark photos and other content that you think would be copied. If nothing else, someone stealing that content will only send more traffic back to your site.... and increase your hit count so you can demand higher advertising fees! Printed magazines are great, but with the publishers of those magazines complaining they cannot afford to continue because subscriptions are low, my suggestion is a reasonable way to try and preserve those publications. --- On Tue, 1/6/09, lhj58w <editor@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <mailto:editor%40deloreans.co.uk> > wrote: > Sorry Marc, I don't agree completely with you there.
