Sean, When I took my GC apart for reasons of irregular behavior, I found that underneath the seal around the connection board between generator and GC electronics one of the generator leads had disconnected from the board and at will provided power or not. After digging out and resolder all worked well again. You could take a peek there by removing all of the sealant.
