From what I've seen, the pressure listed on tires is the maximum. (BOCTAOE.) When I buy tires from my friendly neighbourhood Good Year, they come with a sheet of paper which includes pressure recommendations. I go by those recommendations and haven't had a problem yet. You can also probably look up the manufacturer's recommendations on their web site, or at something like tirerack.com. (BOCTAOE/YMMV/IMHO.)
