I worked at a Mazda dealer here in Arizona. we were replacing the new Renesis motors left and right... I am not sure what they did but in hot weather areas the motors are not lasting. I love my 13B in my RX7 but the new ones are crap. We never had less than 10 RX8's in the shop at an one time and 9 out of 10 came in on the hook. the way recalls and warrantees work at dealerships is that the dealer buys the parts from Mazda and then the dealer charges Mazda the cost plus a margin (dictated my Mazda) and this is how the dealers make money from recalls and warrantee work. Because Mazda was replacing them so often and it was costing them so much they no longer pay for the engines in that way. what they are doing now is just sending a large number of engines to the dealers (at least here in Arizona) and not charging the dealers except if they don't return the cores or the engines they don't need. Service writers hate it (I did) cause we were on a commission basis and that took a $4200 job down to about $700-$800. When you make 5% that hurts. We did about 15-18 engines a month during the summer when they first came out. When I left they were down to about 5-12 a month. Ok this was not totally DeLorean related but does respond to the below statement. If you want more info feel free to e-mail me off list. Kit car or no kit car. Number 1 wish is to have a Mazda Renesis wankel engine transplanted into a Delorean, released in a kit form. The Renesis engine (2004) is the newest generation of the rotary engine, and a major improvement over the previous ones. Superior power to weight ratio, compact, reliability. That's why a lot of Mazda rotary engines end up in airplanes.
