----- Original Message ---- From: David Teitelbaum "Stick a thermometer into the vent while the A/C is running. You should get a temperature 20 degrees lower than the ambient, outside temperature." 20 degrees lower? You should raise your standards! :-) During the trip to Houston this year, I was regularly getting vent temperatures 40-55 degrees lower than outside. With David's help (and some other list members), I was able to track my A/C problem down to a dirty evaporator a few years ago. Things have been great ever since. You can start by making sure everything is clean (evap, evap drain, and condenser). Also replacing the accumulator bottle, the low pressure switch, and the blower motor are very cheap. None of these should be expected to last in original condition; they've been on the car for 26 years. Then check your high and low side pressures with a gage as you rev the engine, make sure you have the proper amount of freon and that the low pressure switch cycles the compressor when the pressure gets low enough, and you are done. There's no real secret here: if it is worn out, replace it. If it's dirty, clean it. The A/C really works well when everything is operating efficiently --and it has to with all the sloping glass in this car.
