I would like to update my post.... First of all I corrected the spelling, and secondly I found some sources for some that are decent if you don't mind spending a little more. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What is a "STANCHION"? Those are the poles and velvet ropes they use at the bank, the movies, and come in handy around your car to let people know to keep back! The thing is, these things are really expensive..... Those "beltrac" versions by LAVI SYSTEMS are the best! http://www.lavi.com However, they are expensive. It would cost at least $100 each, and you would need 6. If you can afford this, I recommend these: http://www.lavi.com/Tempest-Outdoor-Plastic-Post/pd-6.aspx ...and those are the cheap models, the nice ones run up to $400 each. The good thing about these is that they do break down, they are made to be used outside, you can choose the colors, and you can fill the bases with either sand or water. If you search eBay for "stanchions" you will find some cheaper solutions than the Lavi versions, I have seen cheap plastic stanchions for as littile as $25 each, not a bad deal at all. One issue is you need to have a place to keep them. You only have your front trunk for storage, so they need to be able to break down. So I came up with a cheap solution. You can build them yourself cheap, for around $100 for everything. You need to build 6 stanchions. You will need to visit your local hardware store and buy roughly the following: (1) 12" x 1" x 8' board, cut into 6 pieces. These boards are actually about 11 1/4" wide, so you will want to cut your pieces into this same length to make them square. Next you need (6) galvanized floor flange pipe mounts. The size is up to you based on how thick you want your pipes to be. I used 1 1/4" size. I also bout (6) 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" PVC adapters, the 1 1/4" side is threaded, and the 1 1/2" side is NOT, it just slides on. (THIS IS IMPORTANT). Next you need to get (6) 1 1/2" PVC pipes of your desired lengths. I went with (3) 5' pipes that I cut in half to make (6) 2 1/2' poles. This seems like the right hight considering the car is so damned short to begin with, and when mounted in the bases they will be a little taller. I also picked up (6) 1 1/2" caps (non threaded) You also need a box of #10 3/4" wood screws. You need (12) chain connectors of your choice. I used the style that you pull the tab back with your thumb, mounted on both sides. This allows you to adjust your chain to size and attach to the next part.... You need to get (6) loop bolts. You will drill a hole through both sides of the pipe, and mount this bolt with a loop on one side and a nut on the other. This is where you will attach your chains. The chain: You need to get PLASTIC chain!!!! Any metal will be too heavy. I used the yellow plastic chain because it is easier to see. You need (4) 10' pieces, and (2) 12' pieces for the front and back. ASSEMBLY: Now to assemble. Take one of your square wooden blocks and using a ruler draw a line from corner to corner making an "X", you can align the flange in the center. (pictured above) Now screw in the base of your adapter. Using a rubber mallet you can knock on the caps on one side of the poles. Now, use a little VASELINE to grease up the insides of the adapters. This will help you insert and then pull out the poles again. You might want to double up on the wooden bases for extra weight, or add some sort of weights like exorcise weights, sand bags, bricks, etc. Everything will fit neatly in your trunk and can be put together in just minutes when you get to the event. If you think you don't need these, take your car some where and leave it unattended for five minutes. When you return you will find it completely covered in fingerprints and people sitting in the car!!!! I am thinking of putting together some infrared alarms that cover the inside door panels so that if anyone tries to get inside it will sound a loud piezo buzzer. (then they will bang their head on the door and knock them selves out) you will find the intruder laying near the car in a pool of blood. I love it!!! - Videobob >From: "Lloyd" <delorean@xxxxxxxxxxx> >Reply-To: dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx >To: <dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> >Subject: Re: [DML] Stantions for your DeLorean >Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2007 20:19:57 -0800 > > If you have an in with your local bank or something like them, ask if >any of their stanchions are no longer in use, they come in chrome, brushed >aluminum, and some times in brass and the large ropes with hooks on the >ends are really nice, when asked here they had enough to surround my 57 >Chevy and were going to send them to the dump never hurts to ask, I am >always asked at shows where did find them, my secret. they even went to >S.F. for a street rod show.
