That's interesting, because my arrangement is quite similar but I had the cable jump track. The only real difference is that I made a bracket that sits on top of the thermostat housing instead of the rear of the engine compartment. I'll probably combine Marty's trick along with removing the pedal return spring. That should be sufficient to prevent future problems. For a variety of reasons I just never got around to doing it all at once.
