I also have a rather heavy compass mirror in the Vixen. The only thing that has worked is 3M Window-Weld urethane adhesive and a PLASTIC mirror button that is available from Pep Boys and the like. The plastic button is larger and has small perforations that allow the adhesive to grip well into the button. It is still hidden by the black pad painted on the windshield. It holds extremely well, but you can get the mirror off if needed by giving it a really strong twist. The 3M adhesive will never break the glass (it is windshield adhesive after all), although an 8' by three inch wooden tent pole jammed through your windshield will (long DCS story). The mirror stayed on just fine though.
