Correct Dave,

No subsitute for the right equipment.  You can set it by ear but once the 
car is running well take it somewhere where you can use the proper device to 
measure the CO.  Also you're dead on about the grounds and the LAMBDA 
running or not running at Idle.  We had to replace almost the entire system 
on a car out here.  Frequency Valve wouldn't come on at all.  Once we 
swapped out several bad components and tightened up the grounds It came on 
and buzzed strongly at idle.
