I've removed the temp sender a few times, although I can't recall what size socket it requires, you can get to the sender with a long extention. I think I put a few extentions together and used a deep well socket, and just removed it that way, without too much of a problem. Just make sure to remove the sender wire first, using the same process, with a smaller socket of course.
