220 degrees is actually a safe operating temperature for a car. When the water is cut with coolant, and is enclosed in a sealed system where it is not allowed to expand, it's boiling point temperature is raised significantly. As a side note, take a look at your average modern car. While you will have a temperature gague, they no longer list the actual temperature. They just say either hot, or cold. This is to alleviate the exact same concerns that you have about your car right now.
