I had the same problem.  What I did was to cut the lip off of a
plastic "Big Gulp" cup and then glued it inside the frame of the
speaker.  I also created a couple of metal brackets that fit into the
lip so the studs would fit.  The speakers sit flush and sound fine.

In hindsight, I should have looked a bit harder because I later found
direct replacements that would sit flush.  Check this link:  this is
where I purchased my 3.5's and 4x10's and they also have them without
the raised tweeters.
