8.5:1 is B28F spec. DMC may indeed have used slightly different pistons, especially in light of Martin's Renault research. Have you compression tested a crate engine from the factory? Volvo calls for 156 PSI on the B28F. My crate Peugeot block was 160 PSI, so perhaps they used different pistons as well (at least in that application).
