I remember reading something about certain years of the Pontiac Fiero also having an electric power steering pump. Something about not having enough room when they first started putting the V-6 engine in, so they had to get creative. Not sure of the details like where they put it, and if Pontiac used bigger alternators to run it. I'm sure the new BMW is a much cleaner unit than the 20 year old GM technology but just wanted to add my 2 cents.
