Scott, Don't get obsessed about it! It is minor cosmetic alteration and with or without, the Delorean looks great no matter what! Those that have the gas access door in the trunk cover also have the creased hood. The access door was discontinued and the 81s continued having the creased hood until the 82 and 83s came with a solid, smooth trunk cover all together. There are no Delorean in existence that have the gas access door and a smooth hood. The hood frame was never altered as you will notice on all Deloreans that the frame allows for the older style 81 hood with gas access door. For that reason, both styles of 81 trunk lids will fit on the 82 and 83 models. With some interior cosmetic changes, the 82 and 83 can not be told apart. The 81s had two varieties of trunk covers and an 81 model can be made to look like an 82 or 83 model exterior-wise. Many body panels sometimes will have the VIN number scribbled on the inside with chalk. If you want to go that far to find out if you have an original hood, that's up to you! Bye and hope I helped out!
