The bearings are sealed. Chances are you may have damaged them taking them apart and regreasing them or they are worn out from use. If the noise you described is like a whining noise or a "wobble" noise it's you bearing. With the wheel off and caliper off the rear, move the axle around and see if there is any play. If there is I would suggest replacing them. Replace them as a pair, replaceing both the left and right.
