You are correct in assuming that centering the "T" panel will help. You also are correct in how to do it. There is one more thing you need to do though. You should remove the "T" panel. Under it is foam padding that keeps it "up" in the center. It usually needs to be replaced because it deteriorates with age allowing the panel to settle to a lower position and rub the edge of the doors.
