You can 'heel and toe' much easily with the pedals closer together...

DEFINITELY had the same experience - my Size 12 (UK size - isn't that a
13 in US sizes?) it's even worse in the right-handers where the pedalbox
is squashed quite a bit given the right footwell is narrower on the
right.
