As an experienced and successful bookseller, let me clarify a couple of points before any of you get real excited about the possibililty of getting a "new" copy of Stainless Steel Illusion. "Print on demand" services have been around for a few years now. Most of these services have been offered by book wholesalers who respond to orders from retailers. The books offered to far have been of the more scholarly, literary type. Typically these are text oriented books as opposed to picture books. The process is considerably more complicated that simply scanning a book and then printing it. Two essential economic factors must be taken into consideration; i.e., how many copies can be expected to be sold over a measureable period of time and will the original author/publisher/photographer grant permission to "reprint" the book. The bottom line is that unless B&N (who is doing this in partnership with a wholsaler), Ingram (a wholesaler who provides this service) or someone else can see a sufficient demand for a particular book, it won't be "printed on demand" becausse the cost would be even higher than the going rate for "rare" book in question.
