Lotus did not "copy" the Esprit. Lotus had nothing to do with the design
of the DeLorean, at least not the styling design. The DeLorean was designed
and two prototypes were built in Detroit long before Lotus engineering got
involved, about 2 years before. Giugiaro of Ital Design did the final
design work in 1975 and built a full scale model according to his contract
with DMC. Lotus engineering was hired by JZD in 1978 to do the production
engineering work.
