Jim, Without going into a long technical explanation here is a simple example. Chalk across the blackboard and rubbing your finger on a lightly moistened drinking glass will create a high pitched squealing. The anti-squeal shims break the mechanical connection between the rotor, pad, and caliper piston thereby reducing or eliminating the high pitch squealing. If you would like detailed information on this subject from my technical library contact me directly.
