1966-67 Pontiac GTO John Z. DeLorean started themuscle car craze when he shoved a large engine under the hood of a mid-size Lemans and called it a GTO option. Winding his way around corporate red tape, DeLorean succeeded in side-stepping the company's policy against offering mid-sized cars with the high-performance engines. Sales were hard to ignore, however, and in 1966 the GTO was listed as a separate series. Even though the 1964 Tempest Lemans GTO started it all, the good looks of the newly designed 1966-67 models kept the GTO muscle on the right track. Thethree-box styling was now gone in favor of nicely sculptured body sides along with an intense and aggressive look to the front end. Engine choices included the 389cid/335-horsepower V8, as well as a 400cid/360-horse available in 1967. No wonder front license plates on GTOs always say, "GRRRR."
