Repair or replace the shift computer. Replace or clean the transmission filter. The procedure is over at dmcnews.com in the tech section. Have the shop do ALL the external adjustments INCLUDING A LINE PRESSURE CHECK. The whine is "not a good thing" as Martha would say. Either the level is too low or too high or the filter is plugged up. The whine you hear is the cavitation inside the fluid pump and it will mean the line pressure is low. A low line pressure will kill the clutch packs, again "not a good thing". On a long shot it *could* be a bad idler pulley bearing. Just replace them or temporaraly remove the belt on the A/C and run the motor to see if it goes away. You will notice the whine is more pronounced in cold weather, the transmission fluid is thicker, causing it to whine more. Contrary to what you are being told the whine is not normal.
