I would recommend checking the automatic transmission fuse in the fuse box
behind the passengers side seat. If you look on the fuse box cover or the
technical manual you will know what fuse to look at. When you remove this
fuse in an automatic it creates the same situation so it would make sense
that either the fuse is blown, is making poor contact, or you might have an
overheating situation (notorius meted fuse block) in your car. Check those
and hopefully you will find your problem.

While you are in there it might not be a bad idea to inspect the rest of the
fuses as well, see if you have any other problems lurking.
