I remember seeing a picture of a car on the www once with that kind of idea incorporated... If I remember correctly it had two pneumatic cylinders on the parcel shelf with a pulley at the bottom and a steel cable running from the door down, over the pulley and then parrallel to the cylinder to the "tip" of the rod...
