Check the ground-strap between the frame and the engine. I've seen this befor on someone elses car; he had had the engine out and forgot to put the strap back in. Car would turn over VERY slowly and fionaly started to smell funny. Turned out the only ground it still had was through the shift-cable, as the engine is on rubber mounts...
