I wonder if there is really anything wrong with the tie rod ends. I would replace the missing boot and lubricate. Make sure there is no play and check the steering rack. As for the "missing" 5th gear lubricate the linkage and adjust it as per the Workshop Manual. Check the level in the clutch master cylinder and make sure the slave is not leaking. If you still have the plastic line replace it with the brained metal one.
