That's because the front of the engine drops off like a cliff. Back of the engine has cast in dam where transmission bellhousing mates. Example: My Renault block is rotted through and leaking pressurized oil from the upper oil galley in the cast recess for Bearing #3 (passenger side). Spills over other recesses like the Titanic until it reaches the front of the engine, then runs down either side of the water pump -- in copius amounts.
