It is very important NOT to use tap water from areas with high mineral
content in a cooling system. I recently gave my little brother an AMC
(Michigan/Ohio lineage) with a radiator TOTALLY stopped up from
mineral deposits. Water pump in one of my Lincolns came stopped up
everywhere except impeller blades. These calcified deposits are rock
hard. No elixer can get rid of them. Your only choice is to replace
the affected components.

Hello list,
My daily driver has about 36,000 miles on its (new crate) engine (110,000 miles on the body, and it started to perform a little sluggish, so `I decided to change the plugs, wires, cap, coil, and o2 sensor. as well as the air filter. The car still sounds + smells lawnmower like. and when accelerating I here a ticking/sputtering sound. The performance is normal for the car however, its just the sound. A friend of mine thought that it sounded like it was gasping for air and was loosing compression, and that the timing was off. He was fairly convinced that incorrect belt tension caused this, which sounded a little funny to me, (Although my ac belt is not as tight as it should be)
I guess my main question out of alll this is, `If my timing is off and that is causing this noise, what can I do to fix it. Does this sound like a timing problem? Adjusting the timing in the PRV involves engine dissessmbly right? Would I be unwise to let this issue si, I am not vey comfortable with opening the engine past the intake manifold, the water pump is as deep as I would like to go.

Hi All,
Today I received an E-Mail from a cable TV operator
here in Sydney wanting to use my DeLorean for a
promotion they are doing for a new digital movie
channel they are releasing.
For the promo they want the car to enter the shot
doing a hand brake turn.I'm not real sure about this.I
am very protective of my stainless steel beauty and
never try anything silly in it like burnouts or
handbrake turns like I've done in other cars.
I was wondering what others think of this.Is there a
possibility of damage to the hand brake assembly or
any part of the car?My tyres are nearing the end of
their life anyway.I'm a big believer in not turning a
profit into a loss.They are willing to pay me
handsomely but I don't want any undue risk with the
car.
Any thoughts on this are welcome

This year a german fellow had a problem with his TAB !
While leaving the garage at very low speed the TAB broke
off ! I have pics of the TAB if anybody is interested.
I don't even wanna imagine what would have happened 1-2
minutes later at real speed in the traffic !
Another friends TAB was bent lately, after it was replaced
and driven for about 2000 miles.
Oh yes, and not to forget my front lower ball joint which
broke off while driving ab 40...50mph !!
I guess the nut became loose somehow. Don't blame the car,
this was my fault I guess.
But the whole suspension of the car was never engineered,
it was just put together like LEGO...I bet....
But I still love my UFO ;-)

I agree that the TAB's are a bad design, but is it really as
big of a problem as everyone makes it out to be?
Does anyone know how many "catastrophic failures" have happened
where a bolt actually snapped and caused a wreck?
As far as I know this has only happened once according to one source.
I would love to know some real stats.

Removing the Fuel from your car before storage is a good idea.
Just do NOT vacuum the fuel out of the tank.
Using a WET/DRY vacuum is a bad and dangerous idea and I am sure that David
was not implying the use of a vacuum cleaner.

The "best" way to prepare the fuel system in the car for storage is to
remove the fuel. It is not that difficult. Remove the curved access panel
under the spare tire, loosen the hose clamp around the fuel pump boot and
lift the pump boot and all out of the tank. Now just siphon or vacuum the
fuel out. Inspect for any water or dirt and reassemble making sure not to
turn the pump and boot (replace in the origional position). IMHO this IS the
best way because if for some reason winter storage becomes long term storage
(it happens) then the fuel isn't there to go bad. Also in the Spring (or
whenever) now you are starting up with clean fresh fuel without the
stabalizer (which lowers octane, bet you didn't know that!). David

We recently shipped a performance exhaust and radio faceplate to a client in
Tacoma, Washington via Federal Express. The client authorized Fedex to leave
the package on the door in his absence and the package was stolen from his
doorstep. This was last Thursday, December 18th.

Removing the fuel sending unit is a quicker and easier way to suck the fuel
out and won't disturb the pick up hose etc.

Scott - I'm sorry to be so late in my post on this topic. I was on
a road trip to buy additional inventories of original DMC parts for
DeLorean Parts Northwest. I installed an Addco rear sway bar on
Winged1 many years ago. The company had just produced a handful of
kits, and two of us in the PNDC bought them for our cars. Addco
went on to produce the parts and carry the number in their catalog.
In answer to your questions, the installation was complicated by the
fact that the bar didn't fit very well with the included hardware.
The bar was designed to attach to the trailing arms with long bolts
and rubber bushings into steel angles bolted through the trailing
arms. The saddle brackets were designed to be bolted to the web of
the frame cross-member that supports the engine. This saddle
bracket attachment eventually cracked the frame web on both sides.
In addition, the angles of the bar ends relative to the attachment
angles on the trailing arms were wrong, so the end bushings
disintegrated rapidly. I had the frame cracks welded up, and then
installed new doublers made from .200" thick aluminum-magnesium
alloy to strengthen and stiffen the frame web. I changed the
attachment location on the trailing arm to further aft from the
original spot, and used spherical rod ends instead of the bolts /
bushings. The final result of all of this is a dramatic improvement
in the cornering ability of the car, with almost no body roll, and
fantastic turn-in. The price that was paid is that I now have 3.5 "
of ground clearance in the rear, to the saddle brackets. From my
experience on this installation, there are several things that I
would do differently in terms of bar location and attachment
strategy. Several people have emailed me to suggest that I develop
something for this area, and I'm looking into what might be possible
with current "off the shelf" parts in order to keep costs down.

As long as you're connected to a sanitary sewer system, and NOT a
septic tank, you can safely dispose of old coolant into the sewer
(unless local regulations *specificly prohibit* this). Prestone even
reccomends this, and has it printed on the back of their bottles.
Take note that antifreeze is the ONLY automotive fluid that you can
dispose of in the sewer. Everything else must be apporpriately
recycled.
For safety & health purposes though, I'd reccomend pouring into the
toilet, rather than the sink. And if you have pets, keep the lids
down to make sure they don't drink from the water after you've
poured/flushed everything away.

with a properly adjusted (well a little on the tight side) e-brake you cn do
it easly enough on wet pavement but it can get hard to control if you are
not careful. just be sure you are on a surface where if you loose control
you wont hit any thing. another thing you can do is on dry pavement put
some loose sand in the area where you want to slide that way when you get
off the sand the recovery is a bit easier. dont forget to get that clucth
in before you get past the first or second click on the e-brake. doing burn
outs, and e-brake slides dosn't really hurt the car perminantly. the clutch
will take some abuse but that is not that hard to change in a day. it takes
some pratice to get both right. feel free to contact me for more info.

It's designed like that...
The solenoid first engages the gear onto the flywheel and
only then, ath the end of its travel engages the starter motor.
Just imagine how it would sound when you try to push a
fast turning gear into the stationary flywheel gear...
NOT good!
This design is also the reason that sometimes when a car won't start,
putting it in gear (on a manual only) and "bumping" it may result in
the next try actually starting the car! When the teeth of the gears
happen to catch on eachother the starter doesn't engage either,
"bumping" the car will caus e the flywheel to rotate, giving the
gears a new chance to "mesh".

Andrew,
If you can set the conditions of the promotion, go for it.
Best thing to insist on is having a wet paved surface for
the area where it will be filmed. You mentioned that the
tires are due to be replaced, so that should help the spin
capabilities. You did not mention if your car was stick or
automatic, but I'm guessing it's a 5-speed.
It's very easy to get the rear end to come around on a
5-speed car on a wet surface by just using more throttle.
I did this all the time on rainy days with my first Delorean
at the local mall, in front of the JC Penny back in 1985.
This always got a lot of attention, including the mall cops.
This can happen while crossing wet railroad tracks too.
I agree that you do not want to break things by doing it,
but an empty, wet parking lot is a pretty safe for the car.
