I have one of these cheapos... Budge as in budget, BTW, and it's passible for
keeping leaves off your car, but looks pretty baggy. Blew completely off my D
twice last week in strong winds, half off several times too. I tried lifting
it off last winter with a little crusty ice on it and discovered a piece of my
fascia paint came with it. :-( A word of caution. Hopefully the pricier ones
avoid these glitches.

I bought one of these last night at Wal-Mart, it was $59.00.
It does list Delorean on the back, but this would fit about any car.
It is certainly baggy and blows around a lot.
It is made out of the same material that one of my motorcycle rain
suits is made out of, the same thing they make HAZMAT suits from.
Very light weight and water proof.
I am so far un-inpressed.
Does any one know of a heavy padded cover?
Something that might protect in a hail storm?
That's what I need.
Hail season is coming soon... I shiver at the thought!!!!!

Has anyone ever experimented with using different chemicals to protect
the steel from fingerprints?
Here are a fre thoughts I have.
(1) RAIN-X:
If you are familiar with RAIN-X, that make glass water repellent,
I wonder how this would work on steel and repel the water dots.
(3) 3-M:
I have a custome motorcycle trailer (behind the bike),
it has a plastic coating of 3-M around the front to protect from rocks.
They are using this on a lot of newer cars.
I was considering cutting out a shapely peice of this and puting
it around the door handle, and mayby a peice near the window sill.
This would help when opening and closing the door.
Does anyone have anything to add to this?

This was the cover I had for my other D that was so crappy. It would
leave horrible rain blotches on the car, and would fly off too. I
agree with wayne... it's ok for keeping dust and leaves off the car
if it's inside... but it's not worth much of anything outside.

Bob, I know of no product will stop the finger prints, But there is a good
product made by Eagle that goes on like water and has Teflon particles in it
that will retard fingerprints as best it can. Being that it's non silicone
or oily base compound it doesn't attract dust either.

I store my car outside all year round in the UK so I wanted a durable heavy
duty waterproof cover. I went for the heavy duty version size 'M' which
fits nice and tightly over the DeLorean. It has elasticised cords that you
can hook under the car. Here in the UK at the moment there are some pretty
strong winds I my cover remains on the car. Besides allowing the car to
breathe it is also 100% waterproof, frost proof and inhibits UV light. The
inside of the cover is soft so it will not mark the car and when I wish to
use the car I take it off and fold/stuff it in the luggage compartment. I
have had a it a year and still very happy with it.

I promised Classic Additions I would plug the cover as in return they posted
at no extra cost 3 different covers to me so I could find which one suited
the car the most. My car has a retractable antenna so those that have one
on the roof t-panel or fender may need to cut a hole in the cover....
Once you are used to the cover you can take it off/put it on in under a
minute.

This last weekend I purchased some Rain-X windshield washer fluid at
Walmart. It is supposed to leave some of the shedding rain-X qualities
on the windshield every time you use it. It also contains ancohol which
is a low residue organic solvent. So.... I added about a cup full to a
five gallon bucket of wash water and washed my DeLorean with it. Result:
Seemed to do a mild but good job of removing old gunk from the surface
as the sponge I was using became dirty with use on the stainless. I
dried it with a chamoise and the car looked great. Will have to see if
it remains cleaner longer. I did not do any real tests by deliberatly
trying to leave fingerprints but I suspect stainless will be stainless
(And fingerprints will be the bain of us all) and the lingering benefits
will be more subtle. Still I think this might be a great development. It
might get the microgrooves cleaner and keep them cleaner.

Well, like i said. it does the trick but isn't really made for outdoors. i
doubt most DeLorean owners keep their cars outside year-round anyway. i think
a mobile home court is the only place where there is probably not going to be
a garage to put a car in. why not relegate the daily driver or wife's car to
the driveway (then she will hate the car even more!!!!!)?
I use mine to cover it in the garage to keep dust off, and also when putting
the car into winter storage (heated warehouse). for these uses it works
perfectly and has never given me a problem in 3 years. for my use, a much better
buy than a fitted one for 5x the price.
if you really have to keep the car outside all the time, there are definitely
better options.

Custom fit covers will not blow off because they hug contours of car.
When a hurricane comes I do tie grommets together underneath.
The more layers of fabric, the cushier the cover. I stick to 3 or 4
layers. Have survived hail, hurricanes (am 100 miles inland but still
get major detrius from trees) and pine cones (don't laugh -- an
unopened pine cone from 100 feet packs a punch).
Dirty little secret of car covers is they are "breathable", which
means a micro fine layer of dust will get through. Is worst in pollen
season. I just hose off cars before driving.
Because I've got seven cars under cover, which need to be switched out
to access rear of driveway, can't be messing with tie downs, moving
blankets, or anything else that will delay quickly moving vehicles.
Premium covers do cost more, but for my lifestyle, without garage,
have no alternative.
A cover exposed to elements year round does have limited life
expectancy. Fabric becomes brittle and will tear easily after 5 or 6
years. Cover still useable, but you've got to be gentle installing and
removing.
Covers attract cats, especially in the winter. Can rip with their
claws jumping on top of car. Are deterrents not discussable on list
without igniting flame war.
Personally recommend buying cover worthy of DeLo investment. Makes no
sense to spend so much time, money, and energy on car then subject to
cheapest cover available.

Please don't make gross assumptions like that. I lived in a house for 5 years with only a driveway (no garage) and stored my Delorean outside year-round. There are plenty of REAL houses around here (Boston) without garages. Like I said in a previous post, I bought the "Noah" custom fitted car cover from Calif. Car Covers. It was about $250 (IIRC), and well worth it. It's fitted EXACTLY for the car (window pockets and all), and has perfectly protected the car in all seasons, even under three feet of snow and ice for weeks at a time. If you want to go by a cheap car cover and think it will do the trick, as with everything else, you get what you pay for.

I can think of about a half dozen DeLorean owners in the Carolinas alone who have to store their DeLoreans outside. My car got the boot out of the garage once my parents antique Harley's began breeding. We also have a '69 Boss 302 Mustang that's worth about twice what the DeLorean is, so my car never had precedent. So both my D's have had to be stored outside. When I leave one outside for more than a week, I double cover it... I put my regular cover on the car, then put a tarp on top of that for extra protection against moisture and sunlight.
I think a lot of owners on here forget that some people live in the South. We don't have snow... we never see road salt. Thus we can and *DO* drive our cars year round. We don't put our cars into storage in the winter, and the need for garages is less down here. For some perspective, I was out driving my car with the A/C on in 75 degree sunny weather today... and it's late November.

I use mine to cover it in the garage to keep dust off, and also when putting the car into winter storage (heated warehouse). for these uses it works perfectly and has never given me a problem in 3 years. for my use, a much better
buy than a fitted one for 5x the price.
if you really have to keep the car outside all the time, there are definitely
better options.

I have tried numerous products and the best thing I have found is
NOTHING. Leave the S/S as bare and clean as you can and if you get any
fingerprints they can be quickly and easily removed with windex or
alcohol and paper towels. Just about any product requires a lot more
effort and won't look any better. Once a year I go over the car with a
blending pad after removing any scratches with sandpaper. After that
all I use is windex unless there is something too stubborn for it to
remove, then I use alcohol (like on road tar). That is the great thing
about S/S, it is VERY low maintaince. At shows I don't mind if people
touch the car, the only thing that bothers me is rings (they scratch)
and rivets in jeans. I have seen some Deloreans that were waxed, it
doesn't make fingerprints any less noticeable but it does make the
dirt and dust stand out. Of course everyone has their personal opinion
as to how the S/S should look. Some like it grainier and some like it
shinier. (Some even think they look better painted). I am fortunate
that I have a garage that I can keep the car in and I only use a cover
over the winter when the car gets to rest. For a quick touch-up I also
use a California Cover car brush to remove dust.

For about what some of these high end car covers can cost a car cacoon
or a car capsule looks like a good alternative. Not only will it
protect it from dust and dirt, it keeps people off of it, can protect
from hail and snow, and you can still see the car through it! It
protects the underside so even if the car is outside it protects the
frame from moisture and will keep out any small animals that could
crawl into the car and mess it up. Seems like a better choice than any
cover!
