But not too hot -- HR9's I started towards Fall Foliage with never
made it past Fayetteville. Think they came out cleaner than they went
in! Even though insulator is LONGER than Delco R42, and electrode is
nothing more than a tiny dot, burn much hotter. Too hot for my
particular PRV.

I am 9.5:1 however. Hot plugs in a high compression engine can cause
mixture to ignite before spark (actually you get two explosions: one
preignition/predetonation -- whichever term is correct -- and one from
ignition), especially on lower octane fuel.

You want gold/caramel color. Dry black soot is too cold. Absence of
color is too hot.

BTW: if anyone on list has a high mileage engine, or one that burns
oil, I will give away set of HR9's with less than 100 miles. Contact
me direct: brobertson(at)carolina.net.

Subject: Wire Mystery?  Smoke in the Cabin

Group,

I was driving down the road on saturday, as I was stopped at a stoplight, the
car suddenly died.  Just out of the blue cuts off.  I manage to get it to the
side of the road, and for some reason it refires.  I pull it quickly into the
next parking lot to take a look at it. But on the way to the parking lot my
wife and I smell something burning, and next thing we know there is smoke
filling the cabin.  I made it to the parking lot, and opened the access panel
to the fuse box and electrical compartment.
There is a large group of wires bundled together that runs underneath/just
behind the fuse box.  There was one brown wire, maybe 14 guage, that the
previous owner had spliced an inline fuse into it.  The burning and the smoke
was from the fuse melting, I think that is why the car cut off, because the
wire was basically cut.
Anyway, my question is what does this wire do?  And why would it overheat,
besides maybe having the wrong fuse in it.  That day, I had the car on, and
the radio thats it, no ac, nothing else.
I've had the car for 3 1/2 years, this is the first electrical problem I've
had.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

I'm 32 and this is a pretty accurate statement. Most people, especially
under 30, don't remember the sensationalization of the cocaine trial in the
early '80s. Their only recognition of the car is of course, Back to the
Future. Regardless of any flux capacitor or cocaine jokes you may here from
some older people, when kids see the Delorean up close, they think it's the
coolest car ever made.

Willie,

Heavy gauge brown wires go to a few things in the car. You really
need a wiring diagram to trace it out correctly.

BTW, if the fuse had blown, and you had smoke and odor, the fuse in
the ckt was too high for the application. The wiring was burning
before the fuse blew. IF you elect to keep the circuit as is, use a
smaller rated, slow blow fuse. Or possibly a fuse rated the same as
the one that blew but quick blow vs. slow.

Consulting my diagram here, I see:

1. Brown/pink running from the inertia switch to the door lock relay
and the locks.
2. Solid brown running from main fuel relay to RPM relay.
3. Solid brown running from main fuel relay to "aux relay" via 2
wiring harness main junctions.
4. Brown/orange running from fan relays to otterstat.
5. Solid brown from 3rd & 4th speed relays to fan breaker to wiring
harness junction. (the people fan, not the engine fans)

Based on what you said you had running at the time, it could be the
brown for the fuel pump as that is -always- running when the car runs
and maybe the fan wiring depending on what your engine temp was when
the car died. Were you idling in traffic?

I doubt it was the locks. Even if you have the OEM module and it was
trying to lock you in/unlock you in, the thermal trip would have
kicked in before the odor and fuse problems.

Get Ye a wiring diagram. Hope this helps,

Rich

Please clarify - Are you looking for a leftover PRV FROM someone's
conversion, or some other random unidentified other engine that might
fit (in that case the wrecking yards are full of them).

Hello all,

Server problems with the telekom caused major
outages on my server in the last 2 weeks.  I believe
the changes ive made should work.

As for work, the coolant hose kit arrived today, ive
slated saturday morning on the lift to replace my 22
year old hoses and flush out the system.  As usual,
all would be documented into a howto.

If you guys have any thoughts on flushing out the
system on a delorean, or refilling it for that matter,
now would be a real keen time to share your
experiences.

Subject: Re: Brown DeLo Wires

Actually just about everything before main & aux relay's (and a few
circuits that baypass them) is brown. Good rule of thumb whenever you
see a brown DeLo wire is "always hot, always on".

Fuel pump relay is hot whenever fuse 7 in place, whether or not car
energized.

Rich is right: you need a wiring diagram AND the legend. Then you need
to study it in comfort of your own driveway. Time to figure out how
various circuits work is NOT when car is dead on side of road.

FWIW: almost entire car can be driven from relay compartment. Keep 2
and 3 way jumpers in the glove box for those emergencies.

My pet peeve is headlight circuit. Dash switch NOT circuit protected
(hazard switch is, but not headlight), yet has a load bearing device
inside (illumination bulb). Mine melted internally, shorting to the
bulb's ground. Without fuse whole switch went up in flames. Results in
#5939's photo album. You may have had smoke -- I had fire. Very bad in
a plastic car.

Better get used to DeLo wiring problems. They pop up from time to time.

Note most circuits that are switched on the hot side in domestic cars
are switched on the ground in DeLo.

Get a wiring diagram...

The day after I bought my D, I was giving rides to the neighbors.  While
loading a new passenger, a teenager drove by in some funky new-looking
2-seater convertible with the top down.  He was nodding his head violently,
looking at my car, shouting to his passenger (over the thumping stereo)
"Awesome... that is the coolest car EVER!"

Made my day.

If you are looking to buy a Delorean for sale with an engine
conversion already done, I know Darryl is selling his 4.3L
supercharged car (listed currently on DMCNews cars for sale)
asking about $24K for the car.

There is also a 3-rotor twin turbo engine with Porsche 6-speed
transmission that Jim has offered for sale for under $30K, but
if you do not want a black painted car, then you may want to
pass on this one.

I have a 1983 Canadian spec Delorean with an 1984 Buick 3.8L
Turbo Grand National engine installed and working rather well.
I do not have it listed for sale, but money talks if you are
seriously interested.  I would sell for less than both above.

I have recently purchased an Island Twin Turbo kit and it will
arrive within the next few days, so selling the 3.8L Turbo car
would help fund my twin turbo project.  If you are seriously
interested and have the money, contact me off list to buy it.

Thanks,
Rich W.

I would be careful what you say about the Jag Shop. It seems "fatboy",
aka Ed Bernstein, seems to have a special interest in what is said
about it. I received a rather nasty e-mail threatening to sue me, all
the other posters, and the moderators for slander. I don't mind
because I never slandered anyone. Some may mind only because of the
tone of the e-mail he sends. In any case he is trying to intimidate
anyone from saying ANYTHING about the Jag shop. I guess they have
something to hide otherwise they would try to settle this with the
injured parties as amicably as they could. I stand by my advice, if
the injured parties have a case they should make it with the State
agency that licenses the shop. If there is any merit to their side
then the State will coerce the shop into settling. If there is a
pattern of abuses then the State may see fit to remove their license
to operate. As for the DML, if you don't want fatboy to send you
intimidating e-mail then you shouldn't jump in with advice, he takes
it as slander against the "good reputation" of the Jag shop. In the
meantime if you have a Delorean and you need service you might want to
pick a different shop in the area until things work out. The origional
posters should keep us informed as to how this matter gets settled. A
reputation can be easily damaged, it is much harder to repair. The
posters should let us know if it is important to the Jag shop to
maintain a good reputation.

If it is the brown wire then it sounds like the P.O. had a problem
with #7 fuse melting. He did the inline fuse thing. Unfortunatly it
sounds like he didn't do it correctly. Now you have to cut out all the
burnt wiring and reinstall an inline fuse holder (that can handle 20
amps) and a 20 amp fuse. This circuit is for the fuel pump, the Lambda
ECU and frequency valve, and the control pressure regulater. You
should, after fixing the damaged wiring, measure the current draw on
the circuit to be sure it isn't over 15 amps. While you are in the
fuse area check on what you have for the fan fail relay. If you have
the bypass wires they could also be melting.

Check out http://www.dashpc.com/ for ideas, parts sources, etc. As
others have noted, staying as far away from VB is the way to go.
However, staying away from anything with the microsoft logo is *also*
the way to go (IMO; no religous flamewars, thanks =)  ). dashpc.com has
pretty much all the info you're going to need to install a PC into a

Hey Rich,
(loved you on Monster Garage by the way)
What kind of money do you want for the car you mentioned?

Other than yours, I am looking for a daily driver that is a gray manual.
I have been spying on some of the cars on eBay, going for an average of
$15,000
more or less.
I was considering finding a cheap project car and having DMCH put in that
stage2 engine.
I just want a car that is powerfull and a good daily driver.

I'm here in Dallas by the way.
I was in Irving today (between Dallas / Fort Worth) and saw a Delorean at a
Toyota dealership.
It is a Black/Auto with 114 miles, never titled.
They used to be a dealer and they have had it ever since.
It is for sale, but I don't know the price.
When I find out I will post it up.
Thanks.

I got an IM from "beachbabe02001" a few minutes ago. Of course, just
from the screenname, I pegged it for a pornospam (I don't usually get
them, but whatever), and got ready to warn and block. Except that when
I accepted the IM, it said "I heard you like DeLoreans. Wanna chat?"
Huh? Very strange. But it quickly became clear that whoever it was,
they didn't want to talk. I checked the profile, and yep, it was a
pornospam. Warn, block, done. But I'd love to know how it was that the
message was "I heard you like DeLoreans. Wanna chat?" Very very
strange. They must have pulled my screenname off either the DML, the
entermyworld.com board, or the bttf.com board. I suspect they got it
from entermyworld.com, but who knows? It was just so surprisingly strange.

Actually, my brother drilled out the back & found ANOTHER plate behind it
which popped out relatively easliy.  Popped it back in, then soldered the
drill hole on the outer plate, & ta-daaa..... still didn't work right.  Back
to a drawing board?        $70 to replace it.... hmmm.....   with an
electrical engineer/tinkerer for a brother, it may very well be cheaper to
rebuild it.   Remember, I spent $10 on a solid SS tube for the clutch line,
$.04 to repair the clutch slave cyl., $.75 to replace a diode in the ign.
mod., & I've rewound the door-lock solonoids by hand.    Bit of Scotch,
anyone?      I'll carry on.    Drive Stainless     Robert    VIN  6924

What do I do if my throttle arm isn't returning all the way? The spring is already on the second setting. I tried lubing the linkage... still the throttle will stick at about 1100-1400 rpm's after the car has been driven. I can revv the engine and it will get enough momentum to make the throttle arm return all the way. What should I do? Is a new throttle spool spring an option? Obviously I need more tension.

bad ignition wires

He may have emailed you privately about this, but it's one of our own list members, Travis Goodwin. His BTTF conversion is a temporary party trick... most of the time his car is bone stock.

Hey all,
I didn't make it to the Eurofest gathering at the BMW plant here in
S.C., but I heard today that for at least the second year running,
someone brought a DeLorean Time Machine to the show.
I know it wasn't me, so does anyone know who it was/is?  Any info would
be fun and helpful.
Thanks!

A girl at a coffee shop I frequent always yells out the drive through window
that I have the coolest car ever.  She actually gets rather disappointed
when I don't drive it through there.  I guess my 1969 Volkswagen Beetle
doesn't evoke the same emotion.  Her friend seemed to know a lot about it,
or at least John DeLorean because she was studying him in her college
financial class.  Unfortunately she said the professor has been teaching
them some great misconceptions about what happened with him.

In my girlfriend's art class, her instructor came in all excited asking if
anyone had seen the DeLorean driving around town.  She told him who's it was
and he kept bugging her in class with questions.  That was enough to make my
day.  It's kind of hard to be inconspicuous anywhere but it's a good feeling
to see people happy over it.  Over two years of ownership and I still get
excited every time I see it.  Not many cars could do that for me.

Subject: WARNING Re: Parts missing/removed from my car at Jag Shop

The owner/manager sends people on the list threatening email?

Wow. That's very interesting to know. Sounds like harrasment to me.

>From now on, I will recommend to everyone I know to AVOID the Jag
Shop at all costs based on negative comments by various aquaintences
on and off the list.

It's a simple risk vs. benefit analysis;

The stated opinions of many fellow owners would indicate that the
risk of entrusting my vehicle to this shop would outweigh "possible"
benefit of having my collector's car repaired correctly in a timely,
cost-effective manner.

Word-of-mouth advertising, be it positive OR negative is not libel or
slander, if you are only relating an experience you had to your
friends. I caution against embellishment when you tell your story
though. That's where the slander or libel enters.

As for me, no one is going to sue -me- for slander or libel if all
I'm doing is relating to others that people I know were not happy
with the work done at the shop and received email threatening legal
action for discussing the business habits of the shop.

I'm glad you all have shared this with me. Now I know NEVER to use
the Jag Shop for service and I'll be sure to tell all my fellow
owners.

Courteously,
