The general convention when giving directions, left, right, front,
back, is referenced from a person sitting in the driver's seat facing
foward. Therefore to find the temperature sending unit when I say the
front of the motor on the right side I mean the end of the motor next
to the firewall on the side of the motor by the coil cover. You have
to look over the top and down the front to find it. There should be 1
wire going to it. A quick and "dirty" test is to remove the wire and
the gauge should read "cold". Now have someone touch the wire to
ground for 1-2 seconds. The gauge should move over toward "hot". If
the gauge never moves there is a problem with the wiring to the gauge
or possibly even the gauge itself. Don't forget to try this with the
ignition key on. Front is facing front of car to directly answer your
question.

Subject: My DeLorean loves me.
We all hear about eachother's problems with their cars or projects on the
list every day, but my DeLorean's mechanical failures are only done out of
it's love for me. First, she got me out of jury duty on a day I really did
not want to be there. This was a while ago actually. I had parked in a two
hour zone counting on not staying long so of course I was selected. We all
had a chance to move our cars if we needed and when I got out there she
simply would not start. I tried for several minutes before reporting back
to the director explaining that I could not move my car. She was hesitant
but said I could go find a way to get my car towed or fixed and she would
call someone else in for that day in my place. When I get back to my car I
try again and she started right up the first time. It later turned out to
be a bad connection on the inertia switch.
And now last week it further displayed it's love for me by getting me out of
another uncomfortable situation. One of my coworkers told me that it was
his girlfriend's birthday soon and she loves DeLoreans. He wanted me to
drive her around for the night so he wouldn't actually have to do anything
for her (his actual words, plus some swearing I've omitted). Unfortunately
I know this girl and I doubt anyone on this list could stand to be trapped
in such close proximity with her for more than a few minutes. I agreed to
do it, but the morning before I found myself wishing that something on the
car would fail so I wouldn't be able to drive her. Almost as if the
DeLorean heard my thoughts, on my drive to work that day the battery light
came on. I had it tested and the alternator is on it's way out. I told him
about the problem and he was disappointed but understood. I got out of
being her chauffer for the night and I've never been so pleased to have
something on my car break.
Ordinarily I'd be frustrated, but I'm pretty sure she has a good reason for
the lock solenoid failure and vacuum leak that just developed. Now if
you'll excuse me I'm going to go stare lovingly at my disabled baby sitting
in the driveway.

Subject: Emission Testing: NOx
Hi All,
I have a yellow painted '83 in Akron Ohio and ran into some problems last
Friday when trying to get through the emissions testing in Akron. In
previous tests since 1997, when I bought the car, it passed with flying
colors. This time though apparently the Ohio tests now include NO ( nitrogen
oxides ) testing which my car failed with a reading of 1650 against a max
allowable of 1500 ( I believe ).
If anyone out there has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate hearing them
as all I can think to do is to richen up the mixture a little as NOx is
produced by higher combustion temps. Perhaps also retard the spark a little.
I don't hold out much hope for these two dodges since they would both tend
to raise the hydrocarbons.
As always thanks in advance to the list.

Does anyone know what is grounded at this location?
Reason I ask is that my AC blower speed fluxuates and I was wondering if a
bad ground at this location could cause these symptoms.
I plan to clean and repair the ground but I was just curious.

I remember DMC Joe said on the list you should never ground the temp gauge wire as it will burn out the gauge.

Hello.
I'm too excited to shut up about my car, I'm sorry.
Many of you know that I've been making a twin engine Delorean for the
past several years. Well, it's finally running, and street legal,
and now that I get to drive it on the street, I know what I've been
missing. I get a kick out of all the BTTF jokes. During one of my
first rides, a small coolant leak caused a small cloud of steam to
rise off the radiator in the back while I was parking it. A friend
of mine later told me that he heard someone remark: "That's normal.
It's just the plutonium."
I hope I never get tired of that kind of humor, though I think my
favorite one-liner so far is: "You're a maniac, what else is there
to say?"
Anyway, I'm glad to be living the dream, finally, and will continue
to drive it to get the bugs out until it's too cold here, at which
time I'll do the work necessary to get the second engine running in
concert with the first.
I've got a few more pictures to take, then I'll update the website.

Here are 3 suggestions. Drain the gas and refill with a different
brand of fresh HIGH octane. The other is to check that the motor is
not running too hot. You might need a new thermostat and or a new
otterstadt switch. You can also check the timming and the mechanical
and vacuum advance that everything is set up and working correctly. DO
NOT mess with the mixture screw.

If the blower motor fluctuates at only one speed it could be the relay
for that speed. If it fluctuates at all speeds it could be the motor
itself. Use a voltage meter to help find the source of the bad
connection. You could also switch some of the relays around and se if
that makes a difference.

DMC Joe is correct. If you ground the wire for length of time you will
blow the gauge. This is why I said my method is quick and "dirty". If
you ground the wire for only 1-2 seconds it should peg the gauge and
not burn it out. If you want to try doing it safer ground the wire
through a resistor around 1,000 ohms 1/2 watt. As in all procedures
mentioned on the DML you do anything at your own risk.

I think I figured out how the Ballot works. If an individual gets even
1 vote then they are elected to be a Director. They really aren't
running against anyone. In fact there is a box to vote for the entire
slate so if ANYONE checks that then everyone is "elected". I guess a
ballot like this can only come from California! (or maybe Florida?)
The results will be published in the next DW and I will make a
prediction, the entire slate will be "elected" unopposed! I can't
believe a ballot like this could exist in a free country like America!

simply starts. When it clicks i can keep turning the key and the starter will sometimes
start the car after several clicks. Sometimes i hop in and turn the key and it starts.
When i check my battery it is at 12 volts, when the car starts it drops down to 10 volts
when the car is cranking, when i just get the clicking it only drops down to 11 volts.
I believe it is a bad starter solenoid, could i be wrong?

George,
NOx testing is a new one on me. Is Akron non compliant for NOx.
Personally, I would go to a different testing station. I would more
likely think their equipment is calibrated wrong rather than your car
not running properly.
When US automakers first complied with this standard they lowered
compression to reduce peak combustion temperatures. They also
recirculated some exhaust gases to again lower combustion rate and
efficiency.
This lowered NOx from 2.gm/mile to 1 gm/mile.
Retarding the timing (if the computer doesn't adjust for this) would
help some because the mixture would have less time to burn.
I would also try some high octane fuel and octane additive because they
will slow down the combustion process and reduce peak temperatures.

Subject: Bypass? No...I think my car need therapy!
This is REALLY strange! 3 times in the past few months, my car has
refused to start. See what you think...
The first time was a Saturday morning late spring: It had run fine for
weeks, and was in the garage. It would not start. 2 hours later, (and
much tinkering) it started fine. At the time I attributed it to a loose
relay (it appeared to start after I checked all the relays behind the
passenger seat)
2nd time middle of summer: I was out driving for about a good hour.
Stopped at my brothers house, and the car would not start again 40
minutes later. After about an hour or more of tinkering with
everything, it appeared to work better after having jiggled the intertia
switch wire. It stalled several times just out of his driveway. The
inertia switch plug seemed to be the key..jiggle one way, car dies.
some more, car runs. I found a good "working spot" and stuffed the wire
in place behind the intertia switch box. Car ran fine and continued to
do so.
This past saturday: Car was in garage, had not been used for 2 weeks.
WOuld not start. messed with inertia switch wire...no dice. (posted
about ugly plug on the end of the switch, etc...) Decided to give it a
rest unitl i read info on the DML. I was going to attempt to bypass
the intertia switch tonight, but first i decided to try starting it.
IT WORKS!
Keep in mind. NO bumps, vibration, nothing different had happened to
the car.
I think it needs Psycho Therapy for having turned 20 or something!
Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I dont want to get stuck
someplace (the the DMA fall tour) with a finiky car!

1500 sounds about right for emmissions test limit on an 81 but the D
should pass at less than 1000. You are probably as you suspect
running too lean. This could occur with some failed fuel mechanicals
or a combination like a bad oxygen sensor and vacuum leaks. You
didn't say what the CO, HC and CO2 readings were. These readings can
provide some clues also. Are you sure the frequency valve is working
by checking the wires and being sure it is buzzing?
