Hey group,
I heard a pretty substantiated rumor last night from a
DMC investor that some of the investor cars (like 4981
that sits in my contact's garage) were delayed from
earlier models (he was sheduled 2051, so he claims)
due to "Overseas Shipments". This was communicated
via telephone from JDZ representatives to those
investors (like my contact).
The grapevine (unsunbstantiated) is that a LOT of the
low VIN cars were delivered to Saudi Arabia and other
middle Eastern states. A friend of mine in US Army
Intel confimred that he saw no less than 2 dozen
ruined ones in a sand pit in Kuwait when he was there
10 years ago, and even more in Saudi.
Has anyone heard of this before?

Not knowing what minor fixes he did, A basic Bosch tune up kit cost $79.00.
Solder or fix a wire 5 min. So, you figure if $400.00 is to much. Keep in
mind, spending about $75.00 in labor and having a big bill from the shop
doesn't make the car run better. You could buy the tools and do the tune up
yourself and have the satisfaction you did it and have tools left over along
with the experience.

Saw the cat today not running took his word for it. Found out today the
mechanic gave it a tune up a new cap, new rotor, new plugs and wires all
bosch. But no new O2 sensor, he is going to put a new one on today. But I
don't think that is the cause. Thanks for the notes cruzmd I will guide him
in that direction. I hope this is not going to cost to much, do to his
mistake? By the way is $400 to much for the above mention he did do some
very minor fixes, however and a ground wire is broken off from the
microswicth throttle quadant. That wouldn't have anything to do with my
problem would it?

I rather hope you don't remove the stripe. DeLorean's with the stripe
seem to be rather uncommon, and for the sake of some who'd like to get a D
with the stripe someday (OK, dorks like me hehe) I'd hope you'd not make
them that much rarer by taking the stripe OFF of one that already had it.

A hairdryer will heat the stripe up enough to remove it. You may notice
some form of contrast between the stainless that has been covered up by the
stripe for over 20 years. I am sure in the worse case that that part of the
panel could be rebrushed to rid the 'contrast line'. Although I have never
had a stripe to remove on my car, this is what I have heard from other
owners.

I double checked the episode schedule and the weekend re-run is on

Motor magazine July 2003 has a excellant article on finding vacuum leaks
using a general purpose smoke machine. According to the article they run
between $1,000 and $1,300. A little expensive for the backyard mechanic but
affordable for any professional garage. If you have vacuum problems and take
the car to a garage make sure they use a smoke machine to check for vacuum
leaks.

Is 3/4" on one end.
Should have known -- Autozone convinced I have a 3/4" heater hose in
there somewhere. Loves to sell me valves and heater cores with one
5/8" nipple and one 3/4". Trust me: have five of the things covering
all 3 years of production -- no 3/4" heater hoses.
Went back to tower valve I usually use (including DeLo). Factory Air
#74612. Good news is only costs $10.

Welcome to the club. I felt the *exact* same way before I bought my Delorean with a side stripe. But after a couple of months, I actually came to appreciate it - it really makes the car stand out from all the others (sorry guys..), and it's an uncommon dealer option. Now I'm quite happy with it and that I never removed it. Once you get the car, try it out for a while - then decide if you want to remove it.

The engine was set up at normal operating temperature with both fans running
and A/C off. I have set the CO using an exhaust gas analyzer. The method of
adjustment was to simply let the tool sit in the screw head without any
downward pressure turning 1/16 to 1/8 at a time. I can't seem to set my idle
at 950 with the O2 sensor plugged in. If I attempt this it swings wildly as
if it wants to stay near 750. I have been making the idle adjustments using
the curb-idle screw on the throttle linkage. I have noticed that if I use
the idle adjustment screw on the throttle body intake manifold, (The slotted
brass one of the three closest to the throttle plates) it has no effect on
the idle speed at all. As a matter of fact, none seem to have any effect at
all ...with or without the O2 sensor connected! The closest I can get to a
stable idle is a swing of 25-50 rpms in either direction. However, even then
the engine idles very rough. I have checked for all possible vacuum leaks
and there are none. The timing is 13 degrees BTDC on the money. (at 750rpm)
There is no vacuum present at the distributor vacuum advance. The lambda
system appears to be working as is the CIS. That is to say that the air
valve is actuating in both directions and the Lambda system reacts to the O2
sensor signal. The full throttle switch is functioning. ( when I press it,
the idle will settle right down.) The idle microswitch is functional and
adjusted properly...well as properly as I can get it with this idle problem.
At startup on a cold engine, the car turns right over but runs very rough
until it warms up a bit. It idles rough and boggs down if you attempt to
give it some throttle. Once warmed up, it becomes very responsive and seems
to drive O.K. Thereafter, it is easy to start and accelerate but the idle
remains poor.

'Lone hawthorns are a common sight in fields and on burial mounds
all over Ireland, and to fell one is said to result in the loss of
your cattle and all of your money - and even the death of your children.
When De Lorean (sic) set up his car factory in Ireland, there was a
lone hawthorn standing in the centre of the site that the builders had
refused to destroy. Apparently De Lorean finally buldozed it to the ground
himself and there was little surprise among his workers when the car
plant turned out to be a total disaster.'
