I guess I should have said "twist off the stud for the lug nut". The
studs are a faily easy replacement. Removing the lug nuts can be
difficult when the nut "locks" to the wheel if the surfaces were dry
when you put the lug nuts on - twisting off or breaking off the stud
usually happens when the nut is truly rusted or corroded to the
stud - which can happen. A long breaker bar makes breaking the nut
loose, or just twisting off the stud, easier and more controlled.

When replacing the otterstadt switch always use a new seal. DO NOT use
any kind of sealer on it. If you don't have the origional clip use a
strap tie around the pipe. Make sure the wires are not where they can
get melted by anything hot. After you get most of the air out of the
system the system will "self-bleed" small amounts of air. If you keep
getting air to bleed out that means you have leaks that allow air into
the system when the motor cools off. The system MUST be tight! It
should hold 15 psi for 15 min without leaks or dropping pressure.

I hear tell that tail lights and tag brackets were affixed to the rear
fascia in one of two ways, rivnuts and "some other way".
I think I'm the other way. I had little metal squares with a threaded
hole for the attaching screw. Is this a rivnut? I don't even know what
a rivnut is. :) (I was told to take pride in my humility) Many of mine
have rusted and come free from the fascia.
What's the best way to repair this? Some of the holes have been made
slightly larger in size when the metal rotted out.
Please tell me this isn't a "get a new fascia" kind of repair.

Make sure the frequency valve still buzzes. It is on the right valve
cover. You may have disturbed the relay or fuse for it or maybe you
just had the coincedence of bad luck and it just went bad on you! The
most common problem in that system IS the relay going bad.

So I'm going to this dinner theatre thing with my family, you know, one of
those few-and-far-between family outings, and we pass by this less than
quality-looking mechanic's garage. I look in the parking lot as we pass, and I see a
1957 Thunderbird in very restorable condition. Next, a 1970 Stingray, in better
condition. Behind the Stingray, to my disbelief, I saw a 1983 DeLorean. It
was really weird for me, seeing the first abandoned DeLorean I have ever seen...
We swing in, and I see that the fascias were complete garbage, and it needed
some air in the Pirelli rubbers it was wearing. I also saw they had been a DOA
member, with the sticker on the window, and with a hat in the storage 'ledge'
behind the seats. It had also an aftermarket tape player. It was licensed in
Illinois.
If anyone knows about it, I would like to know myself. I want to go back
soon, to see if the owner wants to sell, so maybe I could make my DeLorean custom
to go with my original.

Hello. I've been wanting to enter my DeLorean in a few car shows
lately but I'm finding most of the larger shows have age restrictions
that keep the DeLorean from being displayed. I've had it in a few
small shows but so far all the larger ones tell me that the DeLorean
is just to "new" to enter. Is this pretty common for car shows
across the country?

I understand Robert's passion, but I still disagree with it. This is a free country, and a person is allowed to do what they want, and when they want in this situation, without receiving harassment or extended debates from others. If a person wants to buy a car and part it out to make a few bucks, regardless if this is the case or not in this situation, then they are allowed to do this; even if it against your morality to do so. I think the ambition here to save every DeLorean would be better placed in another cause like save the children, save the Siberian Tigers, or save the kitty cats and puppies in the ASPCA from being put to sleep. Again, although the DeLorean is a unique and wonderful car, it's still just that at the end of the day; a car. (I've already defined what a car is so I don't have to go into that again.) And at this time, there are still thousands of them out there to be owned, and I would guess that the majority of them need to be restored. There are PEANTY of them to choose from for whoever wants one. There probably aren't even enough new replacement parts available to resore all of the basket cases out there. If you disagree with me, fine. Let's just agree to disagree and move on.

I fully agree with Ken that it is not financially feasable to restore
this car. That's not the actual debate here. What is the actual topic,
is at what point should we write off a car. A car like this would be
better off to go to someone putting personal goals ahead of their
wallet. Hear me out...

Half true. The problem is we're picturing two different solutions for
this kind of car. And that is where we're not agreeing. We just need
to open our minds a bit. Let me try to explain by citing the same car
that you mentioned below:

Hardly. Because you're staying neutral with the car by NOT buying it,
that is perhaps the best thing that you can do for the car. If you
can't, or don't wish to fix the car, then don't buy it. And THAT is
the point that I am trying to put across. If the car sits for another
5-10 years, so be it. Eventually, the right person will come along. A
person who wants to take on the challenge. Maybe it'll be because of
an intense passion for the car. Maybe it's someone who's looking for
this major of a car restoration, and they happen to spot this car, and
want it. Who knows. The point is that the best thing for the car is to
let it be. Give it time, things will click together. My car had to
wait 12 years before I came along. And perhaps since you know of this
car, you could share it with the list. Who knows, because of your
actions, you may spark someone's interest, and they buy the car. I'd
reccomend contacting the person, and put the word out on it with
theirr permission. Even the car that Ken has was run through a
gauntlet of potential people who wanted to purchase it. So maybe
you're the key to getting this particular car back on the road. Just
remember, half of the fun for a good number of people is actually
rebuilding the car, not just being an owner of one.
BTW, if it is a flood recovery vehicle, that by far isn't a death
sentance. As said time and time again, customization can be the
answer. Have a look:

Customizaton is a win/win situaton for everyone. It allows defunct
cars to regain their operational glory, and affords those with "stock"
cars the opprotunity to have an unique car become even more unique.

Ken and I have been talking about ways to get more Delorean to his show.
One thought was to group purchase car transportation services. For
example,
a transporter could haul 10 deloreans from LA to Pigeon Forge and then
back again after the show.
Another Truck could go from Houston (with DMC as the coordination site)
to Pigeon Forge
and return.
Rich W. is already considering one from Chicago to Pigeon Forge and return.
This would allow people from more distant places to bring their cars.
This would save them the cost of a rental car while in town.
What we need is someone with connections to a national transporter (or
even private haulers) to work with us. Anyone on the DML with a
hauler? or other ideas?

I think the original fixings were a kind of "clip in" threaded insert.
They can be easily replaced with rivnuts. Other cars have self-tappers.

Tom,
I have run into the same problem in this area. In Pennsylvania a car
qualifies for classic plates at 15 years and antique plates at 25
years. The largest show I was in was the 1st Winter Nationals in
Harrisburg back in February and there was no problem. I was entered
in "Special Intrest". I have seen some smaller local car shows that
have age restrictions but they are the minority. Most are happy to
have a DeLorean entered. There is another big show comming up in
December at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, the cutoff is 1972 so I
can't go.

The part in the facia IS a rivnut. It is a special kind of rivet with
an internal thread. It is installed like a "pop" rivet except that you
use a "special" kind of tool that the rivnut threads onto. You may
still have them but the screw broke off inside. You could try drilling
out the broken piece and retapping it. If the rivnut is missind or
completely shot it can be drilled out and replaced with the "correct"
rivnut. Remember it is metric. You could try to locate it on your own
or you could contact a Delorean vender. These rivnuts are used all
over the car to fasten to the fiberglass like under the spare tire.
You can also oreder the correct screws if yours are missing or rusty.

Always garage kept under cover, never driven in the rain. 1700
ORIGINAL miles. Completely cleaned the fuel system about 18 months
ago but probably needs it again to start. Minor problems such as
drooping headliner, a small separation in the drivers side seat and a
couple of struts need replacement. Original tires, no rust, no body
damage, no fluid leaks and other wise, just like it rolled off the

Has anyone on the list bought and installed the Monroe or KYB shocks
that have been sold on Ebay? They are said to be a direct
replacement, and easy install. I need to replace mine, and don't want
to have to use washers, etc. and want something less expensive than
the Girling OE shocks.
If anyone has the part numbers for these shocks it would be greatly
appreciated, so I can look at them before buying.

Tom - We had an opportunity last May 17th to be in the Spokane, Wa
Torch Light Parade, although they initially said that our cars were
just "too new" to be in the parade. We simply showed the Parade
Committee how many shows, parades, and other such gatherings the
DeLoreans have been in, and how well they are received. It's
basically a matter of educating "them" on just how cool this car
really is. I can't begin to tell you how many shows (large and
small) that I've been in with Winged1, along with many of the people
in the club.

We're still planning to come out with the 10680, but we'll probably

from the quarter panel . . . what does this ground?
I've just discovered mine is detached, don't know for how long and I want to

Ken,
Did I read your post correctly, that you are planning on raffling off a
Delorean at the show in TN? Please more details!!! Is this one of the 1/18 scale
Sun Star models or the real (life size) cars? I know this maybe a surprise and
that all the details may not be ready for releasing but if you could give us
on the DML some more info. What is the year, inter color, auto or 5 speed,
etc.. I for one will buy a few chances on this and I am sure that others will want
to get in on this too. I have twins 13 year old boys and only one Delorean so
a chance to have two (for when they turn 16) is an answer to a dream. For
anyone who has not been to one of Ken's shows, they are an event to not miss. Not
only do you get to meet and put faces to the people who have posted on the
DML, but you also get to see more Deloreans in one spot than the eye can behold.
Now, again if I understand your post, someone will take home a Delorean from
a raffle! Please tell us this is not the parts car that has been the subject
of so much debate, hell even if it is who could not use a few extra parts. So
if possible Ken, can you please release a few more details...............

I don't know that these are the same exact shocks, but after reading
this, I wouldn't waste my time buying them.

For literaly the same price, PJ Grady, and Marty Maier over @ Mid
State DeLorean club offer their own performance shock kits. And for
not much more either, price wise. Plus, it comes with adjustable, rear
shock collars so you can also lower the rear end as well.

Stick with buying you DeLorean parts like this from people who've
taken the time to research the compatability, and are not some
fly-by-night eBay'er who is getting their information from an old,
outdated cross-over list.
Also, take note that this same seller "szyszek", is one who has been
seen selling non-DeLorean parts in the past on eBay, and trying to
pass them off as compatabile (see the previous discussion about the
"air valve").
