I have noticed the same thing here in New Jersey.
The general car shows usually throw us in with the "imports", and wont even let us show with the "production" class of our years. Of course, the import class is always buried away from the bulk of the traffic. At these shows we get the normal run of BTTF and cocaine jokes. A few people even went for one of each!
British car shows always welcome us, and in many cases are quick to give us our own class. The local club around here (Positive Earth Drivers Club, I think) gave us our own class in their show, unfortunately not to many cars show up. The people that go to these shows are rare to make BTTF or Cocaine jokes.
This all seems odd to me, because the DeLorean is really an American car. Just because it was built in Ireland should not make it an import. Hondas made in Ohio are domestic?? Chevy's made in Canada are imports?? It would be nice if we could lobby to have the classification changed (like, in price guides and such).

If you want this car consider the possibility that you have to strip
the paint off and repaint it. There could be a lot of damaged panels
covered with body filler making returning the car to stainless
impractacle economicaly. In the most optomistic circumstance, after
removing the paint you will have to regrain all of the panels, not a
small job. You WILL be repainting the facias in any case. On a car
like this it is probably best to take all of the panels and facias off
to do it right. Don't forget on top of all the cosmetic work you are
also facing considerable mechanical work too.

I would guess that the problem is ignition related. You really should
see a nice fat blue spark. If it has been a long time since a tune-up
(if ever) then that is where I would start. If the ignition wires are
breaking down, the coil is weak, and the gap on the spark plugs is
opening up from wear, this would cause the motor to run progressivly
worse until it won't run at all. To rule out a fuel problem you could
squirt a LITTLE ether (starting fluid) in the intake while it's
cranking. Before you try it pull up the inertia switch to keep the
fuel pump off so you won't flood the engine. If you don't get even a
pop then you know it's an ignition problem.

Best thing in my opion would be to strip all the
panels off and refinish them. Probally keep it a
painted "D" as it was said, there could be alot of
damage under there you just dont know. Remove all the
panels from the car and work on them that way. while
everything is removed go through and do a rutine
inspection of al lwireing and mechanical. I believe in
tear down and rebuild. I believe in "If your gonna do
it, do it right and do it right the first time." This
car looks like a sweet project.

Actually, I would consider the car an import as it has been imported from a
different country and was classified as such by the 1981-83 National GDP
index. I can see why the car could be considered domestic, because of its
domestic ownership, but, GM owns Saab, are those domestic? Also, I doubt very
seriously that anyone would consider an English Ford such as the Cosworth as
domestic. I am usually quick to show at European car events and I shy from
the usual domestic hot rod stuff. I appreciate the degree of warmness and
acceptance that they accord to the D.

Well, It has been said that the reason they discontinued the gas flap hood
was because of the degree of cracking from the cutting process. Many times
the hood would crack when the cuts were made, this made for many wasted
hoods, which is very expensive. Once again, I believe the lines were removed
also as a cost cutting measure due to defects. I am not quite as sure about
this second one, but I do know that less processes in production = less cost
of goods sold. So, one could draw that conclusion.

Hello List,
I purchased this memo from ebay a year ago.
It's John DeLorean sending a memo to C. R. Brown.
I downloaded a scanned copy of the memo in the photos section.
It didn't enlarge big enough to make out some words so hears what it
says:
I neglected to mention that I cut my hand on fuel filler door while
putting gas into car.
All sharp edges must be removed or a welt cemented on sharp edges
for safety before any cars are sold.

Could this have been the contributing factor in the removal of the
flap?
Before my gas flap hood was damaged and replaced with the flat hood.
I cut my hand several times on those edges of the hood. Those little
rubber piece kept falling off.

Some of you might have already seen it, but there is a commercial
running right now for, I believe Nissan, in which a car strips it's
own paint off as it speeds down a desert road! Yeah right. Well,
when paint is first being stripped, it appears almost as if it is a
stainless skin! Later in the commercial, I believe just a gray car
is used. Just thought I'd share...

There were several reasons for the changes. The hood would get
scratched when you filled up with gas. A manufacturer always wants
some distinction between model years. The ridges in the hood were not
needed for ridgity. Probably the single biggest reason though is
"parts count". The Holy Grail in manufacturing is to reduce parts
count. For every part you can remove from the car you save the price
of the part, weight, inventory, less venders, labor to install, and
warrenty issues. This is how people get promoted, by figuring out ways
to make the car simpler or finding multiple uses for parts. Did you
ever wonder why the plate under the "T" roof fits so weird and is
taped down? Next time you look at it compare it to the plate by the
lock for the engine cover. Another fertile area is left-right
symmetry. Many of the parts can be reversed and used on both sides so
you don't have special left-right parts.

I read that the hoods with the grooves were discontinued because when they
would stamp them, too many hoods were being damaged. It was easier to just
make a hood that was flat and simple to avoid losing money on manufacturing
defects. Can anyone confirm this? I'm not sure if that's the same reason
the gas flap was removed. Personally, I like having my gas flap there.

Stainless steel is more difficult to work than sheet metal (take note,
those of us with dented D's). Is especially more brittle. I'm sure an
unacceptable number of hoods failed the initial stamping processes,
given financial health of the company. Better smooth hoods on an
assembly line that's still moving than flap hoods on a line that's
shut down.
Special note to David Teitelbaum: take a good look at American Motors.
The only way it survived so long (indeed, the only time it turned a
profit) was covertly sharing parts among all available models. AMC is
unique for incorporating parts that were not only ambidextrous left to
right, but front to rear as well. And the buying public never caught
on -- give those engineers a raise.
Re: Help! I think David's right -- Rob's problem is probably
electrical (99% of car problems usually are). Didn't even look at his
ignition numbers (assumed John Hervey approved, and we all know what
they say about assuming...). If he's only got 5 volts going into the
coil, his plugs aren't going to fire. I don't think he'll even get HT.
The problem is somewhere between his battery and the coil.

My compressor and/or idler pulleys make lots of noise. I was thinking
of just taking the belt of them to eliminate the noise until I can
fix the stuff. I just want some input on this, any adverse effects,
is it a crappy idea, etc?
