Don, I have thought about the modification. I can build an alternator that
doesn't use the light and it wouldn't be a problem (internally excited). I
have experimented with the wiring of the car to eliminate the bulb, but
personally, I would want the bulb as an and indicator that the alternator
isn't working. Most people that aren't comfortable in wiring wouldn't want to
remove the dash and retrofit a device or solder the printed circuit that is
sandwiched between mylar. Just quite a few problems I would see. But it's a
good idea and would like to peruse it future.

I also looked for a DMC-12 "kit car" for a couple of years and I never
found one. Since then I've upped the amount to shoot for in the ol'
savings account so I can buy the real thing. Granted I was over 16 when
I even got interested in the DeLorean, and the only time I started
saving money for the car was after college. In my humble (pronounced
with the H) opinion, there's no reason to have a kit DMC because the
real thing is so affordable. I could understand, say, turning a LeBaron
convertible into a Mercedes for kicks, or making a Porsche out of a
Volkswagen, but that's because the latter cars are so expensive anyway.
Stainless steel panels alone would cost a bundle. Considering that you
can get a reliable, though not cosmetically flawless, DMC-12 for between
$8,000 and $14,000, it remains a great buy. Then you can fix whatever
problems you find yourself (from what I have heard and seen, it's easy
for even a moderately skilled mechanic to work on), and learn about the
car in the process. Then, of course, there's the bit about buying a
legend ... but I won't get into that lest this post be snipped for
rambling. :) But as I said, my interest in cars was developed later, and
in college I became not only interested in the mechanical aspects of
automobiles but also the history of the automobile, and eventually the
DeLorean in particular. (Although I must admit I'm a huge Sunbeam Tiger
fan, mainly because of "Get Smart.")
Speaking of college, it might be a good idea to figure out what your
higher education will cost you, so you won't have to sell your DeLorean
for tuition. That is unless you're lucky and your parents pay your way,
or you're an athlete and get a free ride. ;) Selling the DeLorean for
college costs would hurt, and it's better to sell it later when you're
buying a house, or when your wife makes you sell it.
By the way, for those who are interested, I've regained some feeling in
my left foot! Pretty soon I'll be able to drive a manual transmission.
Can't wait to learn. Too bad I only own one vehicle and it's an auto. :\
Maybe I should rent a stick shift to learn...

Hallo DMLers,
Having seen David's post on his upcoming visit to the Reno museum I'd like
some advice from you West Coast DMLers! I want to know where there are any
good car museums on the West Coast!?
I am taking a quick trip to the States to pick up a motorcycle I have just
bought in Idaho. I will ride it back to LosAngeles via Seattle (yes, I know
its going to be COLD!!!) between 11 and 17March.02.
As an Architect I am in a 'working-group' in Hong Kong trying to get the
Govt interested in developing a Car Museum ... my rhd DeLorean (currently
being refurbished in CA) may even be on display! I want to take some photos
and present them to the Govt as precident studies.
Any pointers would be appreciated. David, any chance of a couple of jpegs of
the Reno museum facility!?!

It doesn't look like it's the actual BTTF car, notice that there's no
cable wraps along the fender, etc. The plot of the movie seems to be about
kids going to Hollywood to take over a movie studio or something (ala Jay
and Silent Bob Strike Back). So I'm guessing that they just borrowed a
DeLorean so the kids could say "Hey look, it's the Time Machine!"

Ok, we have been discussing this issue for a while now, but yesterday I
replaced my front speakers, radio and console with a new parts. (a.k.a. the
DMC Houston Console)

you will see the new radio, and the unfinished DMC Houston Console, and then
see it after I painted it to match the original. (Image # 191 is the
original next to the unfinished DMC Houston Console, and # 315 is both side
by side after I painted the new one. The houston console is on the right in
both pics.)
BTW: My wife Cheryl found it rather humorous to take photos of my trying to
replace the front speakers, so some of those are up there. UGHH...what a
job THAT WAS!
Anyway....let me know if you have any questions about what I did (and
yes...i cleaned all that crap out of the nooks and crannies of the center
console before I put it all back together)

This isn't the reason that the epoxy flakes off. The frames are NOT
flimsy it just the epoxy was coated on to thick and after so many
years has lost it's ability to "flex" with the chassis. Every
chassis is designed to flex with the car as you drive, no frame
should be built to stay put. Same with bridges, buildings, etc.
Anything which is exposed to force has got to be designed to flex
with it...otherwise...SNAP!

Stainless Steel is indeed strong but brittle.

This has never been proven. Unless PDC has conducted some tests on
it (driving the car insot a wall, etc.) then do not take the word of
someone selling the product. I fear that since the Stainless Steel
is brittle that it will shear/shatter/not crumple properly in an
accident. Unfortunatley no one will find out until it actually
happens to someone.

The original bolts bent because they may have "rode out". Meaning
the nut loosened causing some slack. It is recomended to double nut
the bolts to eliminate this problem. Although seeing as Toby came up
with stronger ones that would be even better ;).
As for painting the Stainless steel you would not be able to do that
unless you acid etched the stainless before hand to prep it.
I went a different route...I sand blasted my old frame and recoated
it with POR-15 paint. Saved ALOT of money and the frame will be
around another 20+ years. Every rodder and restorer I've spoken too
swears by POR-15...used it on every one of their projects. It will
flex with the chassis and will NOT crack and it will not chip. If a
chip does occer then the rust will only appear where the metal is
exposed and not travel under the coating like is did with the epoxy.
If you wanted to perform an engine swap then i would have saved the
money you spent on the frame and went with an engine. If done right
the frame can handle it as Darryl has proven with is Chevy engine
swap and how the other guys proved with the caddy Northstar engine.
If your front end was that badly damaged then you could have just
simply purchased the front end extension from Rob at PJ Grady and
replaced the old damaged extension.

You tell the people at extrudehone that polishing the intake will degrade performance.
with all of their tests they have no loss in power due to this modification.
so what your saying is that the delorean runs at its best stock and that means stock air
box and air filter, i disagree. if you open up any part of the intake system you will
have a horsepower gain even if a little. the delorean has a small amount of exhaust pipe
that will hold anything back and the most restrictive part is the stock headers.
i have changed my intake on my last car and i noticed a big horsepower gain just by
changing the intake and nothing else. cleaning up the intake system on the weak 130hp
delorean will improve horsepower by doing this alone.
the prv was a finely tuned system for the 80's but we are in the 2000's and the prv is a
weak engine by today's standard.

Since it is the only such kit available, I have no idea where the "door launcher" terminology came from, because it wasn't from me. There has been mention on this list from time to time of other companies working on their version of my door opener kit, but to my knowledge none have yet been offered to the public. Maybe one of them will use the "launcher" term, but I for one don't care for it. I just want the doors to open, not get launched into outer space.
As a footnote, in the street rod and custom car world there is something available called a "door launcher". It is simply a spring-loaded plunger that helps open the door when it is unlatched by remote control, something unnecessary with our cars.

This question comes up from time to time. The common (and probably best)
response is that a DeLorean original will cost less to purchase (and in
almost any condition including the ones sold by Houston) than a replica
would cost to build. It is this reason that there are no replicas out there
of our cars. In fact, of all of the kit cars available, they will pretty
much fall into two categories: (1) kits based on actual cars - Lambos,
Ferrari, Hummers (as mentioned before), specialty exotics, etc. and (2) kits
of original design (ie. not based on an actual car). If you look into kits
available today (based on actual cars) as well as kits from companies that
have long since gone away, they are based on cars that are out of the
monetary reach of most people or are in such short supply (and extreme cost)
that any that are around are nailed to the floor of the museum they are
sitting in. As far as cost is concerned, there is no way that a kit version
of our car would be less expensive - even with fiberglass panels.
I am currently finishing up a kit myself of a Porsche 550 Spyder.
Initially, I had 4 choices of suppliers with 3 having cars that would cost
me approx. 18k - 20k for the kit - not including assembly, paint, engine,
transmission, gauges, ... The forth was 7k for essentially the same thing
as above minus the frame which I had to supply (it is a VW bug '73). I did
some detailed calculations and came to the conclusion that it would cost me
about 16k to finish including paint. Right now (a year later and this is
working on it all of the time), I believe that I am about 2-3 months away
from it being 100% complete and am well above 21k - I still have not
purchased any paint or equipment to do the painting (I will be painting it
myself). This is all from a kit that is advertised as the "easiest to build
Spyder" which makes me wonder about how difficult the other 3 kits would
have been.
If a kit is what you are wanting to start with that fashions gull wing style
doors, look into a Bradley GT which you can perpetually find on ebay in
their kit car section. These cars will run you about 5k max for a good
running car with the gull wings. There are several others out there too.
If you are interested in building your own, look into Kit Car magazine.
Every September or November (I think), the magazine has an issue dedicated
to all kit cars available new today. It is a great source for info as is
the Kit Car web site www.kitcarmag.com.

Aaron and I did a test run of the course today and we thought that we would make a couple of suggestion (through the list) to anyone who plans on attending - I expect to see a lot of you there! On Sat. evening after we check into the hotel (and after all of the dyno testing is finished), we will take the Hotel shuttle to Gatlinberg to eat. There is a potential that Gatlinberg will be chilly, especially at night, so please be prepared with the proper clothing. Once the shuttle drops us off, we will have to walk about 3 blocks to the restaurant and then back to be picked up. After we get to the Hotel, we will all strip down to our swimming suits (be sure to bring yours) and jump into the indoor pools they have there. There are two pools and two hot tubs. We will probably hang out in the pool area for a while. We will try to wrap things up at a reasonable hour (not 1 or 2 am like last time) so that we can get plenty of sleep for Sunday - we will need it! On Sunday, the drive will be pretty long. If at all possible, when you arrive in Gatlinberg on Saturday, fuel up the cars then as it will be a very difficult task to fill up 10 (or more) DeLo's at the same time on Sunday without breaking into smaller groups. We need to try to stay together. The drive will be approx. 80 miles from beginning to end. The best part about the 80 miles is that a majority of them will be on curvy roads in the mountains (hence the good sleep). The funnest part of the drive will be the last 25 miles - the Dragon! Once the drive is complete, we will continue to a restaurant where we will eat and wrap things up. We will prepare maps for everyone and will be stopping at a few places for photo ops, confirming that everyone that is supposed to be there is, and in one particular situation, we will be stopping at an overlook that will blow your minds! Anyway, when we are all together at the Hotel, we will go over the specifics and hand out the maps.
I can't wait for next weekend! Make sure you bring your driving gloves, shades, and some good rubber!

Don't seperate the ball joint. No need. Remove the upper control arm pivot
bolt and you'll have plenty of room to work. Watch that you reinstall the
shims properly and retorque when reassembling.

There are three diodes located at the left hand front edge of the
console, on the drivers side. One is blue, one red, the other black. Don't
cross up the wires, but take them out and check them with an ohm meter. At
least one of yours is bad, I think it'll be the red one.

Does anyone know what's going on with the Delorean Owner's Association?
I just received my Winter 2002 issue (with dues rate increase notice,
incidently) and was floored at what was missing from the magazine.
Namely.... the ads... there were almost none.
Take a look at the Summer 2000 issue:
There were 8.5 pages of ads by 7 different compaines. Not including
classifieds or DOA's own advertisements.
Contrast THAT with their latest issue:
2.5 pages by 2 different companies... again this doesn't include the club's
own advertising or classifieds.
I noticed classified ad rates doubled....80¢ a word up 50% from a year ago.
Did the display ad rates jump?? or is the noticeable absence of advertising
a deadline issue?
I know the DOA is a great organization but I have to wonder if they can
continue to publish and ship a 40 page full color magazine with little or no
support from Delorean vendors.
How many paid members does the DOA have? Does anyone have a financial
statement from the club?
Just curious.
