If you happen to come through the East Bay area(east of San Francisco) there is a great
museum that our club held the first 2001 Delorean/Bricklin West Coast Celebration at this
past summer. It was a great show put on with the guidance of our club president, and
keeper of the Delorean Owners Directory, Ken Montgomery.
And probably the only time all 3 gull wing production cars were on display in one
place(Delorean,Bricklin & Mercedes 300). The Southern California Mercedes club just
happen to be passing through on their way to Vancouver and their event and staying at the
same Marriott hotel that we held our the event.

It's called the Blackhawk Auto Museum in Danville, Ca. off Hwy. 680.

It is a gorgeous Museum that is now also affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution

We try to hold at least one meeting of the NCDMC there each year.

Also if you are having your car restored at D1, Ed can give you the location of Peterson
Auto Museum were they hold DOA meetings, although I have not been to this museum I here

There is no disgrace in "wimping out". If you did exceed your
abilities or those of your tools you could have seriously injured
yourself or damaged your car. The trouble with too many mechanics is
that they DO get themselves into situations that are beyond them (like
doctors) and don't have the sense to ask for help or refer to another
shop. The logic is you don't make money sending work away but in many
cases they will wind up either overcharging the customer for more
parts and time then the job needed or worse not even doing the work
correctly.
To see if the tie rod ends are loose just jack up the front tires off
of the ground and while someone holds the steering wheel still wiggle
the wheel from side to side while watching the rod end for any lost
motion. Chances are it is a combination of play in the rod end AND the
rack. Another tip-off is a little lost motion in the steering wheel
i.e. you can move the steering wheel 1/2-1 inch before you feel the
car respond.

Hi Walt,
If your thinking of using a porshe transmission why not install it with a proshe motor as well. I was talking with the owner motorsports place were i get alot of help with my car at (they build the porshe motors for the 24hr races), we were talking about turbos and performance modifications for my car. He said if you wanted horse power just have him throw a porshe 911 motors and trans it and be done with it. If these guys found someone to pay the bill they would do it as well. I've seen alot of the motors there that they build, just incredible how much little 6 cyls can put out(4-8 hundred horse power). Even more incredible is that they can run 24 hrs straight w/o failure. Just a suggestions, personally i would go with a rotorary motor.

Bob,
You already know about the trans upgrade. I want to use the same Porsche 4
speed automatic that you put in your time machine. For now that project is
on the back burner until I get caught up on other projects. As soon as I
finish getting my passenger door back together, I'm going to use my spare
time to make those convex mirrors. And you are the 2nd one on my list for
them.
As for a different engine, I am totally undecided. My first major step is
to get the frame swapped with all the work involved in repainting the
suspension parts. Once I have the car back together and running then I'll
swap the tranny but keep the OEM engine. This will involve making an extra
bell housing, but I have learned my lesson too well to take things in
smaller steps when possible. Otherwise a seemingly simple project can end
up taking forever. When I have the Porsche tranny debugged, then I'll be
ready for an engine swap. But I haven't ruled out the possibility of
keeping the original engine and having DMC Houston upgrade it along with
other modifications. But what I really want (I think) is the Cadillac
Northstar V8. I don't like the idea of sending my car off for someone else
to work on it, so I might try this conversion myself. Maybe the guy will
sell a kit? I doubt it. I was just working on a Cadillac today, in fact.
But before I'm ready to transplant the engine out of one, I have a lot of
reading to do.

That will be a lot of fun to do. Maybe we can do that next year at the next
major show. Reg Pearce (Bryan Pearce's father) told me that the SS frame
stops the car from "curtseying" in the corners. When I'm through, there
will be several things different about the suspension besides just the
frame. My goal is to have a heavy-duty front sway bar with a different
shape to stay out of the way of the front wheels, a rear sway bar that might
be a different shape than the Addco one, new custom front lower control arms
and of course the PJ Grady shocks & lower springs. When I'm done, it should
handle very differently than the average DeLorean.

OOPS, forgot to comment on this before sending out my first post. I
had PJ Grady rebuild my steering rack and all I have to say is that
when I got it back...I thought it was brand new by the looks of it
and the way it worked! Compared to the way it originally was (was
loose and floped around) it was tight and solid...has a good feel to
it. I highley recomend it.

WOW! Took three guys to get the spring out??? Man all it took for me
was a floor jack, a spring compressor set and a prayer. Not as hard
as I thought, it's the fear that the spring lets go and knocks my
head off is what made me do it S-L-O-W-L-Y and why I would probably
NOT do it again (hopefully will never have to either).

rod ends" we call "track rod ends".

Call them washers if you want. They're on the front upper conrtol arm pivot
bolts. Much thinner than an avarage washer.

I purchased my front calipers from wrenchhead.com. They used to have a
listing for Delorean but now I cannot find it under their menu bar. I have
the old boxes at home so I will post the make and number of the calipers.
They fit exactly and cost me maybe $ 25.00 each. Wrenchhead shipped them to
me in 2 days since they are located in new Jersey. I highly recommend them.
My mechanic said they were perfectly matched and they are on the car now.

While surfing the net last night and looking at brake components
(I'm in the process of making all new brake lines at the moment and
installing them on my car) I came across some interesting and
startling information.
The first bit of interesting info comes from this page:

If you look at the caliper (figure 1).It's the exact same one used
on the Delorean (front ones). Go down the page a little and you'll
also notice that the rotor looks about the same too (Figure 3)! Can
we use this as another cross reference for the rotors and calipers?
I know the current cross reference for the front calipers is from a
Mercury Capri. It would be interesting (although not necessary) to
do this conversion on the D :).
The second piece of info I came across was one for concern. I
noticed that some people have modified (and others sell) their front
rotor dust shields for "cooling" purposes. Why does this alarm me?
The dust shield is in place to protect the backside of the rotor and
brake components from everyday road debris such as mud, dirt, rocks,
etc.. By bending the dust shield to achieve a cooling effect for the
rotor you are exposing it to all of this road debris. Not only are
you channeling air to the rotor but also all the mud, rocks, dirt,
etc... that is kicked up while driving. This would be ideal on
track/race cars since A. the rotors are replaced after every race or
every other race and B. the track is cleaner then public road ways
we ride on everyday. In some instance race cars don't even have
these shields in place to cut down on wind drag and "lighten" the
car (every bit counts). If anyone is thinking of doing this then
please re-think it. The rotors are expensive and it's not an easy 5
minute job to replace them. I'm sure there will be people jumping on
this post trying to make it look wrong but think about, the flare
that is created to force air in will capture and force debris onto
the rotor and brake assembly causing damage (you'll see some "dings"
divots, gouges, etc on the surface of the rotor). Have you ever
noticed that build up of "crud" on the back of the dust shield? The
front of the rotor is not prone to this problem because A. It is
protected by the Wheel and B. there is no type of "flare" or "wing"
that is channeling air and dirt onto the surface of the rotor as the
so called "dust shield rotor cooler mod" is.
This is from the DICTIONARY OF AUTOMOTIVE TERMS:
dust shield: Sheet metal disc or plate placed on the brake assembly
to keep debris from brake assembly. Also called "splash shield."

I just put in a 100 amp alternator from Summit racing. Black powder coat.
89.99 outright and no core charge. Also avail in chrome. This is a one wire
unit. No bulbs to worry about but you sacrifice the idiot light. Installation
required the removal of approx 3/4 of an inch of the back side of alternator
pivot casting. Easily carved away with a hack saw. It's soft aluminum and
easy to work. Wrap the unit in tape to avoid filling it with metal. Only
other mod was the use of the Mr. Gasket chrome alternator bracket from a 350
Chevy. $12.00 at Autozone. Cut it to length, and offset it 3/4 of an inch
towards the front of the car with spacers to a small fabricated 1/4 inch
thick alum bracket that goes to the original bracket pivot stud on the
engine. Bracket goes to the back side of the alt, not the front ala GM. While
you're at it, take a look at how the alternator wires get back to the
coil/connector box. They must have been drunk....

In the course of its long winter's rest, my D has developed a
non-trivial oil leak. This was completely out of the blue--the engine
didn't leak at all, then one day there were puddles on the floor.
It appears to be leaking from between the the engine and the (automatic)
transmission. Do I assume correctly that this is likely the main seal?
If so, how big a job is it to repair, and what is the easiest procedure?

Our club (PNDC) has a flap sander that we use to re-establish the
grain on panels that are in poor shape. For minor touchups, the
scotchbrite pads work well. The flap sander uses a relatively coarse
sand paper, and must be used carefully to get the grain straight.
This can be a challenge on the curved portions of the panels, but with
patience, this results in a very nice looking brushed appearance.

Subject: lowered front end and jacking?
hey all,
i'm contemplating lowering my front end with PJ Grady's front spring set. i
like the rear but i would love to drop the front and get rid of that
unsightly wheel space. however, i am afraid of the troubles i will find with
jacking the car up if i do so.
how do those of you who have your car lowered jack up the front end? i want
to know if there are any floor jacks available that will fit under there so i
can jack it from the front crossmember behind the crumple extension. i
already know the tricks with driving it up on 2x4's, but what if i am in my
garage and the car won't run and i need to get it jacked up? what do you do?

Subject: Drive Axles thunking?
HI,
Every time I take a corner in my car I get one "clunk" coming from the
rear of the car. I checked the trailing arm bolts and they were tight with
no shims missing etc. so I ruled that out.
Another member on the DML (thanks Jim) told me to check out my axles as
they can cause the clunking noise I am describing. I jacked the car up to
find that one of the CV boots was missing and 2 others were torn pretty good.
When you grab on to them they move back and forth and make the clunking
sound which I am probably hearing while turning.
Today I removed the axles as I am going bring them in to be cleaned and
repacked. Should I just pack them up with grease or did I most likely cause
other damage by running it W/out the CV boot?(at the most the boot was
missing for 3k miles as I checked it at the last oil change and it was OK) By
the way this car is an automatic.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: DMC Houston radio Bracket Question (and others...)
I didn't install the radio in my car, I had it done. But, my question
is this: Is a radio adjustable inside of the sleeve? The reason I ask
is this. On my car, the face of the radio sticks out farther than the
bracket, beacuse of the sleeve that holds it. So to cover things up,
theres a little frame that came with the unit that covers everything
up. Problem is, I hate it! Every car (D or otherwise) I've seen with
an after market radio seems to stick out beyond the console/dash.
While of course factory original always remains either flush, or
recessed. This is a look I perfer. It gives a more "stock", if not
professional/nicer appearance. Now I've never used one of Houston's
brackets, but to me the smaller sized hole for the unit to fit thru
would be a whole lot better at hiding the rest of the radio behind
the bracket! It just seems to me that something needs to be
implemented to support the front portion of the radio.

Subject: Mid-Atlantic DeLorean Spring Social...
Spring is in the air, and this means it's time for some of us to dust off our cars and get them ready for the new driving season. And what better way to kick off the new season of driving than to attend this years DeLorean Mid-Atlantic Spring Social? Due to the overwhelming turnout last year (33 DeLoreans!), this year it will be a 3-day event. April 26th-28th. The event is open to anyone... club member or not. (You can become a club member that day however if you wish. It only costs $15 for the year, and you get a lot of stuff for that!) The Lotus Owners of NY are also invited, so there will be a variety of Lotus' to see there that day!
Day 1:
It all starts on Friday evening when out-of-towners check in to the Hampton Inn hotel in Flemington NJ. There will be a room where Rob Grady will take your questions about anything DeLorean related. It will also be at that time when you can sign up for your car to be inspected the following day. From there, we'll move on to dinner at a really great Italian restaurant which is not more than 1 mile from the Hotel. After dinner, anyone who is interested can either return to the hotel for a good nights rest, or can hit the town and enjoy some beverages.
Day 2 - The main event:
On Saturday, we'll gather in the parking lot of the hotel to drive over to the main event. This year we'll be at Don's Jaguar Service, which is only about 2 miles from the hotel as well. At the location you'll be able to do many things. Club members will have the option to have their torsion bars adjusted for free, and also a general, quick inspection if they like. The torsion bar adjustment will be performed on those cars with droopy door syndrome, where necessary, by the door inspector. There will be a car show also, where you can enter your car to win a really nice trophy and other awards. Also, awards will be given for furthest traveled with their DeLorean! Club members who put their name on the list for the inspection from Rob Grady will be able to pull their car into the shop and put it on the lift for a more thorough inspection and possibly some minor repairs. Only a few cars will be able to be gone over due to the time frame involved. (The first people who sign up at the hotel are the ones who will get preference.) There will be food, music, raffles, and DeLorean talk all over the place. After the event, off we'll go to another location for dinner. This one I'll leave open to the decision of the group, but my suggestion is a local Chinese restaurant. They have an unbeatable, and affordable, buffet of all kinds of Chinese food; including Sushi! All you can eat for (I think) under $10!
Day 3:
Then, if you choose to stay until Sunday, we'll all take a ride down to Raceway Park in Englishtown, NJ for their Spring Car Show and Swap Meet! There are HUNDREDS of different kinds of cars and vendors there that day. It's really a great show. Let's swamp the place with DeLoreans!
Now, the costs for the weekend:
Hotel: Reduced rate $89/night (if you're close by and want to drive up and not spend the night, that's fine)
Dinner at Italian restaurant: Your choice (not mandatory)
Torsion bar adjustment: Free for club members (membership is only $15/yr.)
To attend event on Saturday: $5 to help pay for the food served that day
To enter your car in the show to compete for the awards: $5 (helps pay for the awards)
For club members to put their car on the lift for a thorough inspection: $20 (goes directly to club funds for future events and club costs.)
More info: The hotel is very nice. Normal price is $119, but I got a group rate of $89 per room per night. You can reserve friday night, and saturday night if you'd like as well. The room includes free continental breakfast, TV with cable, coffee maker in rooms, full shower with bath, choice of single king or dual queen size beds, indoor heated pool, Jacuzzi, small fitness room and there's a washer/dryer if needed. A maximum of 4 people can occupy a room. There are only 18 rooms available. 4 Kings with smoking, 2 Kings non-smoking, 3 Kings with handicapped access, 4 double queens with smoking, 4 non-smoking, and 1 double queen handicapped accessible. (The handicapped rooms can be occupied by anyone, they just have the special rails in the bathrooms.) If you plan on attending, you MUST reserve your room by April 12th. After 4/12, the reservations will be cancelled and open to the public... and this hotel books really quickly! To book your room, call 908-284-9427 and tell them you'd like to reserve a room with the "Mid-Atlantic DeLorean Club". Give them your credit card info and you'll be all set! Rob Grady is donating his time to come down and perform the inspections and minor work on our cars. He is donating his time to help support our club. If anyone here watches 'That 80's Show', Rodger's apartment has a large sized Delorean poster hanging on the wall. Did anyone else spot it? In the show Rodger sells cars for BMW, so I was hoping to see some Delorean references in the show.
