When the DMC's were manufactured, the doors were fitted to the body before
any of the other stainless panels, since the doors were the most difficult
to align. If your doors close correctly, then it is the fenders that are
out of alignment.

As a curiosity (and for those keeping track) here are the VINs of the cars
that had "OCEAN FREIGHT DAMAGE". The document clearly state that these
DeLoreans are "TO BE CRUSHED". I guess they were beyond repair. I'm also
wondering if these are the cars that were featured in an old DeLorean

Having a friend who worked in the QAC in NJ, I think I can respond to this
e-mail with some certainty.
My friend told me many stories of repairs he had to do on the cars that
entered the QAC. One story in particular was swapping the frames for 3 or 4
cars (can't remember exactly which it was). He said that these cars were
delivered with damage to the eye hooks/loops on the frames. During the
transport, the seas were rough, and all of the rocking of the boat caused
the loops on the frames to be ripped off. He told me that the chassis on
these cars were swapped... he added that the crews did all of the swapping
on one weeks time. Pretty fast huh? Anyway, the point is that many cars did
come in damaged from transport, but they were repaired. Panels were swapped
at the beginning, but it was discovered early that panels with minor damage
could be repaired and they were. He said that he repaired some panels
himself on cars. As far as totalled cars, I can't say for sure, but I would
guess that they were dismantled and used to repair other cars with damage,
or put into a parts supply stock. I'll have to ask him what happened to cars
that arrived with extensive damage. I'll let you all know if I find anything
out.

To the best of my knowledge the QAC's were very good at insuring that
severely damaged cars never made it to the dealers. We also know of no
shortage of factory installed door shims.

stainless body beautiful wet body style. Also it is easy to use. When it get

When we first inpected our car before we bought it, I had noticed
that the rear tow hooks were both bent the same way. The drivers side
door aligns perfectly, but the right fron fender is slightly out of
alignment (but the door seals, all water leaks cured). While
performing a oil change, I noticed that there was damage to the cross
section of the chassis in front of the oil pan. Several scrapes and
indentations scoot accross the chassis and have damaged the epoxy. It
looks as if a pile of chains were left under my car. Where the hooks
are bent and where the epoxy has been compromised the is some
oxidation, so this had to have happened a long time ago. But the
damage to booth indicated that the car slide to the right. Now never
thinking about this before I also have body damage to my pasengerside
rear quarter panel. It looks as though something vertical and even
was pushed into it head on (no scrapes, but had to notice). The other
thing that would support this theory is on my doors. While removing
my new headliners for a cleaning I noticed they had been swapped. The
car was approved by inspector K #7647. Whoever he/she was wrote "VIN
6582" on both doors. However, it looks like someone came along later,
scratched it out and wrote "VIN 6585" (my real VIN). The other
writing looks like jibberish, but it also looks like the
date/time/and employee # was written on each door when it was
completed. There's other writings, but they really don't relate right
now. I know the closest cars from me are in Sweden >6581< and San
Diego >6582<. But who knows if these cars would show damage since
there's no way of knowing if there was a specific way in which the
cars were lined up in the cargo holds, or what VIN's went with what
shipments. Maybe if others in this range could check thier cars. The
other thing is when the cars were shipped. My car is a NOV build, and
the DMV in Ca listed as first purchased in June 82. So my guess is
that it spent had to have spent a bit of time somewhere, either in
Belfast, the west coast QAC, or the dealership, or even all, who
knows...
On another note, a while back the was talk of DeLorean's that were
listed by the company to be destroyed due to severe damage. If you
check the archives for the posting, I belive that several VIN #'s
were posted for these cars. I hope that all of this helps!

I've just had new carpets made for my '81 black interior. The original carpets were severely worn out and I found it cheaper to have the entire set duplicated by a specialist classic car carpet manufacturer. The entire set cost £120 (UK sterling)and took about 3 weeks to make. They look great and also have modern sound deadening material on the underside.

When you try to start your car, can you hear the fuel pump humming?
It should not surprise anyone to learn that our fuel pump connectors are
wearing out. My car did the same thing earlier this year. I thought it
was the inertia switch, but it turned out to be the electrical
connections to the fuel pump. They do not last forever. My advice is to
cut the wires, go to a hardware store, and buy some sort of strong
connector to replace it.
Everyone should probably replace this connection in the next few years.

Last night Patti and I got a look at some of the DeLorean historical
artifacts in the vault of the Crawford Museum.
As promised, they have the large model of the DMC factory. The model is
mounted in transparent case. It has never been displayed to the public
before, but it WILL be put on display for our banquet.
They have many other objects in the DeLorean collection. Most are just
copies of sales literature that we have all seen before and many of us own.
However, the collection includes some other peices that beg for further
research (e.g. DeLorean related photographs). Unfortunately there is not
sufficient time to research it all and create a museum display out of these
small items. I will pursue this after the show and post anything I find to
the DML.
Perhaps a few years from now the Crawford can host another DeLorean event,
presenting a complete and well-researched version of the DeLorean saga.
Finally, we found that the Crawford has another very large artifact from the
ambitious heyday of the DeLorean Motorcars Company that can easily be
displayed. It is an enormous grey and black muslin banner that must have
been used at automobile trade shows. The sight of it caused me to imagine
those hopeful early days, when the DeLorean was new and exciting, with a
promising future. To Patti's surprise it moved me.
Like the factory model, the banner has not been seen since DMC closed its
doors. However, the Crawford has promised to display it for us at our
Friday night banquet. The Crawford DOES allow photography, so pictures of
these one-of-a-kind DeLorean items are bound to be posted to the internet.
Let me repeat: these historic items will be displayed only once. That will
be at our banquet on Friday, June 16.

Subject: Driving Tour: Clarification
As of now, the Nobody Gets Lost Driving Tour of Cleveland and Rock &
Roll Road Rally has 126 people. Holy mackrel! That's a lot!
One caution: we will be starting the tour in the street. This affects
people without partners and people who use CDs.
If you are coming to the show solo, do not count on stumbling into a
navigator or driver at the tour launch site. We will be launching from
a short street behind the Great Lakes Science Center (DCO volunteers
will be directing traffic to this spot). There is no all day parking in
that street. You cannot leave your car there and ride off with someone
else. Feel free to meet people in the hotel or Science Center parking
lots, or walk to the launch, but do not bring a car down and expect to
leave it there.
Everyone will get their soundtrack cassette (CD if you have requested
it) at the moment of launch. We assume you can just slip it into your
player and go. Some cars have CD players mounted in hard to reach
spots. If yours is one, you can save yourself some trouble by
discussing it with me at Thursday's cocktail reception or by showing up
for the tour a few minutes early on Friday morning.

The scheduled release of the Die-Cast Metal DeLorean is July 2001 in Hong
Kong
The price range for the 1.18thscale model will be some where in the $24.99
to $29.95
range. This is no pie in the sky deal, the manufactures now produce 31
different die-cast
metal car models. I understand the first run will be 70,000 units.
A full physical measurement and foto survey of my DMC-12 is scheduled for
next week.

The latest date you can mail a registration for the show is Saturday and
still have a chance to get registered. Mail has been taking on average two
to three business days and I am leaving for the show early Thursday morning.
Registrations have continued to come in and we could surpass the 250 people
mark.
We will be close to 100 cars.
An agenda sheet and a reminder to which events you signed up for will be
handed out with the T-shirts on Thursday at Shooters if you are there or you
can pick up your packet Friday when you register at the Holiday Inn. If you
haven't gotten your T-shirt at Shooters you can get them and any remaining
packets on Friday evening at the Crawford or Saturday Morning at the
registration table.
Your Rock and roll Hall of Fame tickets and Science Center tickets will also
be in the Packet. The Goodtime III is just a check in. I will have all the
tickets. Times will be posted again in the registration packets.

Subject: New DMC Engine Shake down Cruise
Just talked to Stephen in Houston, and made plans to link up with him and
James Espey on the road to Cleveland. James will be driving Gus's car,
which now has most of the suspension upgrades and should have the new
headers installed. Latest report on the engine is that it is incredibly
smooth with a strong, broad power band. It is smoother running when cold
than the stock engines, and I think DMC has come up with a winner here!
Those of you who know my car, know that several years ago, I replaced the
engine and incorporated a number of hot rod tricks. While I have been very
pleased with the increased performance, it does have some rough spots.
Until the engine warms up, it tends to bog down a bit in the low rpm range.
Even when warm, the low end torque is less than ideal, making it a bit of a
challenge to come off the line quickly. This new engine seems to have
solved these issues while providing about 20 HP more! Stephen and the boys
at DMC have always told me that my car is faster than the turbo cars they
service, so this new engine is looking pretty good indeed.
The drive to Cleveland should be interesting, to say the least! Have you
ever seen James drive, Gus? (heh, heh) Not to worry, son. He's driven
mine several times with no permanent damage. So, while in Cleveland, be
sure and check out DMC and Gus's car.

The connections at the fuel pump involve three different metals.
Electrolysis isn't unusual at that spot. Swathing the connections, after
they're tight, with di-electric silicone seems to be the best answer.
