How many times have we all read this or something similar? I'd like
to take this opportunity to give a big THANKS to the moderators for
their time and effort in managing the DeLorean Mailing List.
To the naysayers (David Knudsen, for one) that would suggest that the
DML is hurting values or discouraging people from buying DeLoreans, I
say the proof is in the pudding, and we're all eating it here!!!

Wayne,
This is typical of the original window regulators. There are three common
failures, one of which is a cracked drive gear. When the gear cracks the
motor worm drive will jam and no longer move in either direction. Because of
the very high failure rate of this part installing the heavy duty
replacements from PJ Grady, DMC Houston, and DeLorean Services is the most
cost effective fix.
PS: In some rare cases this problem can be caused by a bad window switch. An
easy test is to exchange the two window switches and see if the problem
follows the switch.

The night before last I discovered that my right headlamp had burned
out. So as you've probably guessed I replaced it along with the left
one. When I went to the store I found that they had the new Sylvania
Cool Blue lamps available to fit the DeLorean. After using these,
I'll never even consider a headlight conversion again! The bulbs are
ALOT brighter then the stock lamps, and are much more white. The
complete specs for the bulbs are on Sylvania's web page:

Low beams: H4656 CB
High Beams: H4651 CB
Rather then use the long H codes Sylvania put's on the box, you can
just go by the simple codes on the bulbs themselves: 2A1 for the
low/beams, and 1A1 for the high beams. The odd part though is that
the bulbs themselves will say SLYVANIA on them, but the package for
the sealed-beam version says GE on the box. Either way, they're the
same lights.

There are two major causes of AC mode switch failures. Most common is the
detachment of the rubber vacuum deflector which results in partial or
non-operation of the air deflector flaps inside the air plenum.
Recently we have discovered a new problem. The rotating assembly center
shaft will crack from age and wear causing the switch to disassemble. These
controls are repairable but you may want to consider a new purchase. The
replacement switches have an additional contact that engages the AC
compressor when the defrost setting is selected; very useful for defogging.

Although we have not yet participated in a concours, we did take our
D to twenty-three car shows this year. We placed in twenty-one shows
and more often than not we placed 1st. Although we put a lot of TLC
and effort into our D, having the winning formula at these types of
shows(non concours) can be difficult because there is no real
structure or guide book to follow. We do it for fun and the love of
our car. The D does the rest. We have competed in all types of
classes with all types of cars and the D always seems to have the
edge.
But all of these events didn't mean as much as coming to Cleveland
and competing with our own kind. We placed second in our class but
more importantly learned a lot about our car and met some great
people! We are going to participate in the concours for the next
couple of years and hope to learn more about our car and have fun in
the process. The fact that we have a judging guideline for our D's
is a plus in my book. Although there appears to be some grey areas
and differences of opinion, the guidelines for the most part are
set.
We enjoy seeing the posts on concours competition as it helps us and
others tune in on what they need to do to place.

click but the contacts could be burn't so they won't make contact.

will reassemble it for you at no cost. I have provided this service for 14
years, to customers as far away as Europe.
I'd like to add one more comment to the "dead thread" on inertia switches.
They can suddenly fail with NO outward sign (button not popped up). It
happened very embarassingly on my own car a few years ago. Put in a new one
and all was well. I suspect corrosion was the culprit.
And speaking of dead threads, why on earth haven't the moderators killed the
concours one yet? Do that many of you even care??? These cars were made
for driving, not storing forever. Those who disagree should collect stamps.
Or buy all of my 10,000 New Old Stock parts! (Okay, don't get huffy, I'm
not serious. But think about it - its a CAR, not an artifact.)

I would like to clue the list in, on the main benefit, to using silicon
hoses as replacements for coolant hoses. That benefit being, a silicon
coolant hose's life expectancy is for the life of the car.
GM used green silicon hoses on the 95 Chevy Caprice (police package). The
current Caprice that is assigned to me has been in service now going on six
years with no hose failures. And let it be known that this car is put
through paces every working day. Paces that you would not dream of doing in
your Delorean. Looking into the coolant hoses further, I have found that the
dept. has not one documented coolant failure related to the silicon coolant
hoses and many of these cars have close to 100,000 miles on them.
I know that there is a company in England that is willing to make a silicon
hose kit (for a price), including all the hoses for the Delorean. I have
passed that information on to Rob Grady so maybe soon this will be an
option.
Silicon coolant hoses are going to cost more then your standard hoses, but I
think that if you have ever changed out the coolant hoses on your Delorean
before, that the extra money spent will be well worth it, not to do it
again.
If any of you out there have purchased silicon hoses to install, please take
note: You must use wide body stainless steel clamp, that has no adjustment
holes in the inside of the band. A regular coolant hose clamp with the
adjustment holes that go through the clamp or a small body clamp may cause a
hose failure.

I had a similar problem with mine (also on the right side!)
I removed the window switch gently, then sprayed electro-clean on the
contacts. Put the window switch back on and - VOILA! The window worked!
You may have some bad connection due to dust and dirt. Also check for
corrosion. If this is the case you can try a rubber and sandpaper and gently
remove the corrosion. Then finish it with the spray.

Just spoke to the owner (Harry) about the car and here is some additional info:
The car had been painted red, but currently is primer gray. Black interior that
is currently disassembled. The car has numerous electrical updates.
Mileage on the car is 70K. It's an early 81 with the gas flap. Harry is
located in Santa Clarita California and has another D that he purchased new in
'82.
The one for sale was a project car and Harry just doesn't have the time to put
it back on the road. He was great about answering any and all questions.
