I don't know about a defroster switch exploding, but when I
bought mine I found that it wasn't working...it just teeters to one
side and doesn't "click" to go on or off.  Would anyone else know
how to fix this?

If you need a new radio mounting plate for the console, check the Mid-State
DeLorean Club web site. http://www.midstatedmc.com/  under Parts. One of
the guys has a plate that can be made up with a DIN opening in it instead
of the older style shafts. He can make them up with any size as long as it
will fit.

I have some 9-pin connectors to match up with the original factory radio
wiring harness. They aren't on the web page yet. $6 incl. shipping to the

It was my understanding that the plunger is pushed up by a ball laying in a cup;
when the car turns over or if a shock is applied the ball comes up out of the cup,
thus pushing up the plunger. The Inertiaswitch shuts off the fuelpump AND
unlocks both doors if they were locked...

I remember seeing an illustration of the inner workings of the InertiaSwitch,
but I can't find this picture anymore (it's late...) Maybe someone else
knows where to find this illustration?

Jim,

A non working frequency valve will make little difference in the idle speed.
If your idle has jumped to 5k RPM's your throttle plates must be stuck open.
Temporarily disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle spool and see
if this corrects the problem.

In order for the engine to operate efficiently throughout its entire range
both the frequency valve and idle speed motor must be operational.

Christian,

Many plastic coolant bottle failures are at the bottom seam and cannot be
detected unless the leak is in progress. To determine exactly where the leak
is originating conduct a cooling system pressure test. If you don't have a
pressure tester most service facilities do and can perform the test for you.

Noah,

To test the idle speed microswitch operation; with the engine turned off,
have an assistant push and release the accelerator while you listen for a
"click" back at the engine compartment. If you don't hear a click the switch
is out of adjustment. If you do hear a "click" start the engine and ground
the black/green wire connected to the microswitch. If the idle drops to
normal the microswitch is defective.

Subject: Silicon Water Hoses

In response to a question regarding the silicon water hoses. Yes, Rob
does use silicon hoses on the ones behind the water pump. He says he has
had great success with these.  They compress better than the OEM hoses
and don't have the problem with freezing temp leaking issues.   I just
has my entire cooling system hoses replace except for these as they were
just done a few years ago when the water pump was changes but I WILL get
them replaced with the silicon hoses when the time comes.  If you are
due for replacement of these hoses don't even think of using something
else.  Call Rob.

The plug wires sold by our store, DMC Houston, and PJ Grady contain the
double sealing boots. If water enters the plug receptacle either the boot is
not seated properly or the rim that the boot seals to is dirty.

Joel,

Both the 5 speed manual and 3 speed automatic transmissions are well built
and reliable. The manual trans has few internal problems but the clutch
components will have to be replace when worn out. The auto trans contains a
computer which is prone to failure from heat and age.

In the long run both transmissions are extremely reliable and cost of repair
at 100k miles would be about the same. The decision on which DeLorean
transmission is the best choice should be based on personal choice.

If you are using Carfax,it is NOT 100% accurate if you look up Vin #
SCEDT26T3DD016686(1983Delorean)you will see that it shows it as
a "Clear titled" Delorean,But in fact when I bought it, it had a
Salvage Title to it,and I repaired it and sold it with a Connecticut
certified "Repaired" Title(And I let the new owner in on that fact)
But yet Carfax shows it as a UNMOLESTED perfect Title,best best is to
do a Trace thru your local Motor Vehicle,and talk to the prevoius
owners.

As far as the Microswitch. I can sell you a new one for $19.95 or your's can
be checked for proper operation with a VOM meter. Very simple. You can buy

So far the VIN searches, for the most part, have been very interesting.  For
list members I have done 17 searches.  On 12 of those I found relevant
information, and 5 had no data available.

Some Deloreans have liens recorded, some have inconsistent odometer
readings, one had a front end collision reported.  If you live in a county
that requires emissions inspections, these are reported fairly consistently
as either pass or fail.

It's worth a shot anyway.  I need your complete VIN number and an e-mail
address to send it back to.  Send requests to me privately at

Realy? what year was it when that was a required item on all fuel injection
engines? I've never seen anything that comes close to a interia swich on any
of my saabs, (all w/ fuel injection) but there is a RPM relay on them, so
(besides unlocking the doors at impact) don't they do the same thing? (w/the
fuel pump)

Subject: additional note: Water in spark plug holes

The area I am suggesting to put the RTV sealent on is on the rubber
cap that sits ontop of the spark plug "well" NOT the spark plug
itself. This will hold the rubber cover on the wire in place and keep
out moisture and water.

Hey everyone I just wanted to let everyone know that last night we
had a sucessful unexpected chat session on my website (good trial
run). The only bad thing about the chat room that is on my site is
there is no Name list of anyone that is in the room. However,
everytime someone joins it is posted in the chat window with the name
they come in as or change, same thing holds true when they leave.
This will be my last posting about the chat room on the DML since I
don't want to bog it down with repetitive info. To schedule or to
check scheduled chat sessins, go to my site and look/post on my

John / List,
I have got vin 20049 started...I found the rubber pipe coming out of the
bottom of the fuel pump was kinked, I cut a inch off it and re-fitted it.
Still no flow!..I then undid the joint in the fuel line, just after the fuel
pump fuel drained out, re-tighted the joint and "hay presto" fuel through to
the fuel head.
I am still running on a temporary power electrical  feed to the fuel pump as
the live is still dead at the plug / socket.
There is no power at the inertia switch either.  This is despite me changing
the black/blue relay box, and the other two fuel related relays.
At least I can drive the car the few yards onto its position at our big car
show on Friday.
When the engine did start, it ran a little lumpy, this was soon fixed when I
found an ignition lead not clipped on the spark plug  properly.
Any thoughts on why I still have no power to the fuel pump?

Subject: no start-new problem

Help! Car won't start. First time problem!!!!  Always ran super!!  Got progressively harder to start after driving and cooling off. Checked fuel.. poured a little   gas into the opening under the filter... wouldn't fire up.... turns over easily but won't catch....Checked spark... none. Checked inertia..ok. checked electronic computer under metal plate behind drivers seat and it's ok. ...cleaned ground connectors in the engine compartment ( firewall gadget on the driver's  side)..coil is ok... replaced condenser... have previously replaced fuel pump...has a full tank of fresh gas .....battery strong ....replaced accumulator....replaced check valve last year ...question: will the cold start switch "kill the spark"  if it is shot? My local mechanic is stuck!
